BOTW is a good game but it shouldn't be the future of the Zelda franchise . Worried they'll humor this by making spinoff games, with the b-team devs and less funding ($30 release, like the DS/3DS for consoles). Which would be good games too, I guess... Just not nearly as good

I like linear games , OOT, ALttP, Wind Waker . Is my chapter of Zelda history over? What do you think CE. Is Zelda open world, for good?

I didn't like BOTW as much as other Zelda games. One of my favorite things from Zelda games was getting a new weapon/tool from a dungeon that let you do cool things.

I don't really think it's a big deal if Zelda develops a B team of some kind to do more traditional games. The only part that might be worrying about that is that they don't get the budget they deserve allocated to them.

We don't even know a ton of details of Tears of Kingdom yet. It will be open world but it still could be more similar to OoT, TP, etc. than you might be expecting.

I love BOTW and its probably the best game in the series, but I agree I would like to a return to the og formula in some form.

Its kinda like when RE4 came out. Sure its a better game, but not exactly the reason why I love the series

OoT is pretty nonlinear too. I think it really caught the perfect balance of being a forward moving narrative, but giving the player options to change it up. Nothing has quite reached that level. Majora's Mask and Wind Waker were a lot more linear, but still had a couple instances where you could mix things up. ALBW was too open in my opinion, where there was no sense of really advancing.

I think BotW being open was a good call though. For that game, it was necessary, and it made it better. I would like to go back to a mix going forward.

i loved botw and my time with it was amazing but idk if i have it in me to play it again lol. it consumed months of my life and i can't do that any more. it was probably the best experience since the first time i played oot as a kid in 1999.

i do enjoy the more linear zeldas but they were getting bloated with way too much bullshit in tp and especially ss. i wouldn't mind a return but god they need a lot of trimming

albw was amazing loved it. i wouldn't mind it being more focused though

also bring tphd and 3ds oot/mm to switch you bastards

All I want are dungeons dungeons dungeons

I wanna be balls deep in some ancient fucking ruins with esoteric puzzles and ghosts/lizards/whatever kicking my ass and shooting fireballs and shit. That feeling when you enter a room and the door closes behind you, then the sliding bars pop up and it's like "oh shit something's going to happen in here"

BotW hit a lot of good notes but very few times did I ever feel like I was really in the thick of it.

All the pieces for a really great dungeon were already in the game. The Divine Beasts and Shrines all had the puzzle aspect nailed down pretty well, but they were lacking in the other areas that make up a typical Zelda dungeon. Hyrule Castle had a lot of enemies to fight and allowed total freedom. It perfectly represented what BOTW was trying to be in my opinion. But it also isn't a traditional dungeon.

Ideally there's a mixture of everything. Keep shrines but maybe reduce the number of them. Make a couple dungeons that have the openness of Hyrule Castle. And then throw in some more focused, linear dungeons that you'd expect of a typical Zelda game. Everyone wins.

As long as Zelda doesn't stay stagnant, that's all I care about. I appreciate how wildly different the art direction can be, really makes the games feel different.

I think after BotW, they should go after a more-realistic approach again, though. OoT and TP attempted to do this for their times, and I'd like to see Nintendo's take on that approach again. Even if OoT may not seem like it with how much it has aged, it was trying to go for that more serious/gritty look.

I dunno but I admit I had a hard time getting into it as well. I messed around a lot with that thing that let you levitate platforms while on the plateau mini dungeons at the start but once they let me loose I wandered around a bit, got killed by moblins a dozen or so times, finally stumbled into Kakariko and then never touched the game again.

I wouldn't mind botw being the foundation for future titles much like ALttP ended up being the foundation for almost every game until botw

It's a hell of a lot better than "find the three items in the forest, volcano, and water area to get the master sword" formula they did for years

There should be a balance between the two though. Like bring back actual themed dungeons with unique designs, and integrate the dungeon item mechanic into the open world. I could see uses for stuff like the hookshot, grappling hook, spinner, pegasus boots, etc in traversing an open world

Or make the map smaller but take cues from Majora's Mask. Lots of interactions with the NPCs and intricate side quests, maybe with a days of the week schedule type of system

It definitely was not. You needed the bow to get to Snowhead, Epona to get to Great Bay, and the hookshot to get to Ikana. Those are gained sequentially from area to area

I really enjoy its structure, but it's not open world

I prefer non linear. Link between worlds had the right idea. Could use some tweaking if we want more classic zelda too. Like maybe find the items in the overworld rather than dungeons or buying them

No, it has the illusion of being an open world, just like most other Zeldas before BotW. The trick is you were gated behind items that (barring glitches) you had to get sequentially, which absolutely frames the entire games path for you.

Its much closer to a metroidvania style of game then an open world, where, by the end, sure the whole world is open to you and you can freely roam it, but ultimately, the path you must take to get there is almost completely linear .

The notion that dungeons were my least favorite part of the Zelda formula was already starting to take hold around the time of Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, but BotW drove that point home with a hammer. The 'traditional' 3D Zelda dungeon is more often than not a bloated, boring headache; the bite-sized approach to puzzle-solving that Shrines brought to the table was such a welcome relief. I wouldn't turn my nose at a greater level of visual / aesthetic variety, though.
