this board had its anime-well poisoned a decade ago when dozens of sycophants decided the best way to get some weird girl's attention was to adopt her extremely basic taste in shows and i can still see the ripple effects today

anime rec topics on CE are annoying because who the fuck actually recommends death note or fullmetal alchemist to anyone? it's like being asked for food recommendations and responding with "oh i really recommend bread. also water, have you tried that one? i'm a fan". like what the fuck do you think you're adding here

I read Lord of the Rings because a girl liked it, but I don't think I got around to trying to talk to her about it. Real dumb stuff.

That hasn't been true for a while. These days, more seasonal anime do get dubs than don't. The dubs also come out a lot faster than they would years ago, so people don't have to wait as long if they prefer to watch a show dubbed.

If the person asking for recommendations says "I've watched a lot of anime" or lists shows they've already watched and liked, then yeah, we can recommend more niche titles. But if we don't know what the person asking has watched before, how deep they are into anime, or what genres they like, it's usually better to make "safer" recommendations of popular shows and then ease them into more niche ones later on.

i used to think subs were for the real weebs, then i realized hearing the same 4 funimation VAs saying cringy localized lines for years and years was actually orders of magnitude worse

I'm watching some turkish soap opera because of my fiancee. I guess it makes sense that love or attraction can me you try media you wouldn't otherwise

I follow a lot of the Japanese VAs so I naturally like watching anime subbed. Plus occasionally I like to consciously listen to the show so I can try and follow the Japanese and learn.

It's why playing Live a Live (vidya I know but bear with me) in English was more refreshing than usual because they didn't use the same small cast of dubbers that do fucking everything and they opted to cast mostly unknowns to my knowledge, and they all hit it outta the park. Like 13 Sentinels was a pretty good dub especially considering the circumstances it was done under, but that shit was practically a Persona and 3 Houses reunion, get some new blood in there.

Names immediately coming to mind are Yuri Lowenthal, Tara Strong, Steve Blum, Christopher Sabat, Laura Bailey, and Monica Rial.

all dubs are garbage regardless of the country of origin

it makes sense, no one wants to be a part time voice actor, they want a full time multi decade career out of it. i don't blame them, they're talented, they do great work. but the result is that many characters' voices are not unique.

Subs do about the same. You're just not understanding what they're saying (I assume?) Compared to the writing in English. Anything other than understanding the Japanese is going to be different.

Also, I prefer dubs, but subs are okay. It's always really annoying to have to read though when I want it in the background because I'm definitely not fluid in Japanese.

Nah man I saw a One Piece episode that subtitled one of Chopper's lines as a frowny face ( :( ), that's definitely accurate to what he was saying at the time.

(Not an exaggeration, I actually saw this. Can't remember the actual episode but it was during the Foxy arc)

There's probably 30+ fairly popular English VAs as well, y'all are goofing.

If you watch a lot of subs it gets really apparent if you're paying attention

there's always some guy in the anime recs topics who is enthusiastically recommending a show with his whole heart so you give it a try and it's the worst thing you've ever seen

I'm considered a casual when it comes to anime as I only really watch the more popular, well known stuff. I'll watch dubbed or subbed depending on the setting and characters usually. Mostly 'western' characters (ex. FMA, AoT, Spy x Family, ect), dubbed. Mostly Asian characters, subbed. An exception is if I find a major character's voice super annoying/distracting, I may switch. If I rewatch an anime, sometimes I'll also switch on the new watch through for something different.
