Basically this, the only way I can see this model working is for shows that are not finished with their seasons. But with a lot of things put on Netflix they finished their seasons already so this is just a ploy to keep subscriptions up.

The claim is completely unsubstantiated from a Screenrant opinion piece btw. It would make sense to go back to a weekly format though. Every other streamer does it and it prolongs the discussion of shows. It would also probably be better for subscriber retention.

Binge model kills shows.
It's way better for the longevity of shows to trickle feed them so people are discussing and hyping it up over a much longer period of time.

As an anime fan, thank fucking god if this is true. Netflix licensing anime that were airing on TV in Japan and holding them in "Netflix Jail" for weeks or sometimes months was annoying as hell, especially since I would have to constantly be dodging spoilers (from people who decided to pirate the show instead of waiting) in the process. For their original shows that aren't available anywhere else, sure, hold off and release it as a batch. That's fine. But if it's already airing on TV weekly, then simulcast it the same day for fuck's sake.

Plus as mentioned, it kills online discussions. Stone Ocean feels like a complete afterthought despite how much the JoJo fanbase grew over the previous parts.

The binge thing did kind of kill the Joel McHale Show.

Like, I'll watch 25 minutes of corny ass jokes and reality TV show "news" whenever I feel like it, Netflix. I'm not going to watch all 3 hours of it in 2 days. Also you guys are fucking stupid. Why are there near completed/finished syndication shows on your service with only ONE season available? Where are the other 3 season of Magic Schoolbus? Why is only Season 1 of AOT on there? Or the same with One Punch Man? Or sort of the same with HunterxHunter (at one point it just ended in the middle of the Chimera Ant arc)? Why are Jackie Chan movies constantly appearing and being removed from Netflix?

Thats mostly a rights issue and in some cases probably Netflix being too cheap to purchase the full series (Looking at you Criminal Minds that was like 3 or 4 seasons off)

I'm not hating on binging at all. I'm specifically hating on Netflix actively holding off on simulcasting shows when they're being aired in other places through other means. If the only options to watch a show are "wait 3-4 months for Netflix to drop all of the episodes at once, miss the online discussions, and risk having the show spoiled for me before I even get the chance to watch it" or "pirate it" then you can bet your ass a lot of people are going to pirate it. If the binge drop on Netflix is the first way to watch it, then I don't have nearly as much of a problem with it.

The only time Netflix is the first place is for originals like Castlevania.

Binging is fine for older anime though. No need to release Haruhi one episode at a time again.

I'm fine with this. I feel like I retain what happens in shows if I watch them weekly. It gives me time to reflect on what happened in the episode. If I move straight into one after another, I'm more likely to forget what happened.

This would also help somewhat with spoilers for some people

What I am saying is that in most of these cases either an entire series has been completed (via older shows that have finished up) or new Netflix original shows that have been completed prior to release and uploaded onto the platform. The only benefits from the binge model t away would be for shows not fully completed and for Netflix to keep subscriptions going because of the fact that other streaming platforms are taking more of the chunk from Netflix.
