I mean, when you're at that age, things can hit you like a brick wall out of nowhere.

A few months before her passing, my grandma was mostly fine, but then about a month prior suddenly started experiencing the effects of alzheimers and dementia, and then went into coma before passing.

I wonder what will happen next. Charles doesn't exactly seem popular.

I don't know if 'lovebird syndrome' is any kind of officially or unofficially-accepted medical phenomenon, but I see it all the time. As was already pointed out, Elizabeth started going downhill after Philip died. Stan Lee didn't last more than a year after his wife passed, iirc. Even my own grandmother went downhill and passed within months of my grandfather, despite the fact that - due to his Alzheimer's and needing to be in a rest home - she'd barely seen him in his last few years.

When a person gets to that age and loses the spouse they've spent most of their life with, they simply lose the will to go on living.

He's been Prince of Wales since he was like 5.

No way he's going to forgo the crown in favor of William, as many seem to desire

Probably a mixed bag tbh

I've gotten the sense that the British monarchy isn't particularly loved even in their own nation but it's still one of the things that "defines" the UK thus the death of the monarch is still a very sad affair for many.

Multiple generations literally don't know a world where she isn't the Queen.

I can't say I have much of an informed opinion on her, but that is something else. World-changing.

Now would be a great time to abolish the monarchy after the country is done mourning, though, tbh.

I don't know if anyone in Parliament has the stones to suggest it and it most certainly would be contentious, which is kind of the last thing they need any more of at the moment.

Yeah same here. My grandma will be 100 years old in about 20 days or so. She's in good health and can still safely drive during the daytime, but I am worried about something happening to her before then.

It's certainly not a hard rule, apologies if I inferred that. And I'd be talking out my ass if I attempted to explain why some advanced-age lovebirds die shortly after their spouses and some go on living for many years after.
