Inequality is something Lawrence has had to contend with in Hollywood, too, where she has often been paid lower than her male co-stars. The Sony hack revealed she made far less than the likes of her male co-stars on American Hustle, while reports revealed in 2021 that she earned $5 million less than Leonardo DiCaprio on Dont Look Up despite sharing top billing with him.

Lawrence told Vogue that all actors are often overpaid, but that doesnt make the pay gap any less frustrating. She added, It doesnt matter how much I do. Im still not going to get paid as much as that guy, because of my vagina?

The Oscar winner will be heading to the Toronto International Film Festival this month to world premiere her new drama Causeway, which opens on Nov. 4 from Apple.

I hate it when media personalities complain about this shit. There's no such thing as equal pay in a field where your very existence dictates your worth. You get paid what you're worth to the project through negotiation. You can argue that particular projects may stiff people relative to their actual value or argue for more openness in what your coworkers are getting paid to allow for fairer negotiation, but not every star has the same value to a project.

I just checked that her net worth is $160m and she is 32 years old. If she continues to work another thirty years, she would have roughly the same amount as actors like George Clooney, Johnny Depp, and Tom Cruise. Basically, shes on pace to have close to half a billion dollars.

She could afford to donate 75% of what she has, never work again, and still have more than she could ever want. There are people who keep our power grids up and teach our kids who dont earn enough to pay the rent. If you have a big voice (lots of twitter followers), dont be selfish and complain about how you should have twenty or thirty million more dollars when your fans can barely afford to see your new movie.

Was just reading this. The fact that shes so rich so young (for comparison Dicaprio at 47 is valued at 260) kinda dismantles her own argument.

Now we can can talk about Florence Pugh who was really done dirty making much less than her co star. My point is that there's merit to her claims, but shes not a good example of it.

I don't pretend to know the intricacies of actor value but it's a hell of a lot more complicated than "Be in movie, get paid a lot". A lot of male actors tend to have a lot more draw than women, mostly due to demographics, so they get paid more. If you want to go down a rabbit hole on why that is go for it, but it's not just some executive smoking a cigar saying, "Hey, let's pay women less".

Can you quote me one legitimate study where men and women with comparable skill levels, seniority, and time worked are paid differently? Typically the oft-quoted pay gap uses the "average man" and "average woman" who are two completely different workers. Meaning men are more likely to work longer hours are harder, higher paying work, etc. For example, I work in the oil and gas industry in the Gulf of Mexico where your typical employee works a 14/14 schedule, would you like to take a guess how many female personnel I see on a rig?

While I'm sure that if you looked at it as a whole actresses do make less than comparably famous actors, and probably more significantly, there are probably more big name roles available for men than than women, it's really hard to analyze on the individual level because of how context specific the comparisons are. Like yeah, she made less than Leo, but Leo is one of the biggest names in Hollywood and has been for decades, there is probably a single digit number of actors, men or women, who would get paid comparably. Similarly the American Hussle comparison doesn't necessarily hold as well given that that she was still up and coming at that point.

She's privileged incarnate bitching about someone else having similar privilege.
The grand majority of human beings will never accumulate anywhere near her wealth or status, including the majority of men.

Her profession is also in the entertainment market. Star power and chosen roles dictate those paychecks. If someone with a dick negotiates better and attracts more consumers, can't really fix it in that field. Equity was never part of the equation. Fame and motivation of consumers is. At elite levels there's no way to make that arena ethically "fair". Popularity rules.

Some male megastars reach high success because their appeal reaches both female AND male demographics. Jenn Lawrence has no shortage of popularity with male consumers, particularly in regards to her looks. That charm is not as big of a selling point with female consumers and her acting is not exactly irreplaceable.

If more women as consumers helped promote her as a favored icon and persuaded more men to support her work, there could be a shift. Statistically, she's SOL on that one. Female consumers are less likely to pay to see actresses like Lawrence. And activist takes like this article are actually NOT strong motivators with consumers regardless of sex. Some women will actually roll their eyes whenever they hear another pampered Hollywood bombshell whine about gender pay inequity in a field where she's still more privileged than 95% of the world.

I think you just need to in and tell them what you want? The cast of Friends all got paid the same. Why? Because they went in there and demanded it together. I blame the male co-stars and not the people hiring them. The male co-stars should all know this is any issue, and they're all multi-millionaires.
