My understanding is that California uses a different blend of gas and so is dependent on a seperate set of refineries. There was an issue with some of those refineries recently, so gas prices jumped up in CA.

Why are gasoline prices in California more variable than prices in other states?
California gasoline prices are generally higher and more variable than prices in other states because relatively few supply sources offer California's unique blend of gasoline outside of the state. California's reformulated gasoline program is more stringent than the federal government's program. In addition to the higher cost of this cleaner fuel, state taxes on gasoline in California are higher than they are in most states.
California refineries need to run at near full capacity to meet the state's gasoline demand. If more than one of its refineries experiences operating problems at the same time, California's gasoline prices can increase substantially. Even when supplies are available from other West Coast refineries, U.S. Gulf Coast refineries, or from foreign refineries, they can take a relatively long time to arrive in California.

Good question, just looked it up:

Cleaner-burning gasoline is fuel that meets requirements established by the California Air Resources Board (CARB). All gasoline sold in California for use in motor vehicles must meet these requirements, which have been in effect since Spring 1996. Cleaner-burning gasoline reduces smog-forming emissions from motor vehicles by 15 percent and reduces cancer risk from exposure to motor vehicle toxics by about 40 percent.

Well that's fairly effective and the price jump isn't usually that significant when refineries are meeting supply. Sounds like it should just be a national standard. Though at this point electricalization will make it a moot point before something like that would be implemented.

It's just been crazy this year watching prices climb after labor day in spite of all the reasons for them to not.

Nah screw this take. I enjoy being able to breathe and see the sky for more than a mile down the way. A luxury that didn't exist for most of my childhood.

The price is going up to fuel record profits, it really isn't much more complicated than that.

Regardless if it can be tangibly proven that it's substantially better for health and for the environment a couple dollars extra for gasoline is worth it. And I run a business that relies on RVs who guzzle tons of gas.

I think that is the question right? I think California was hoping it could sway companies into making the better fuel for the environment for everyone and so far that hasnt succeeded. If Californians want to keep paying more for this then that is their prerogative, but you dont want to incite a backlash that torpedos all environmental reform

I think Californians wanted to not live under impenetrable smog every day.

I'm pretty excited to visit my sister in LA after the states goes all EV. Sky is going to be clearer than ever before.

California gas is not a new thing. Apparently it's been a thing since the 90s and the price disparity with the rest of the country was never so significant before.

I cant stress enough that when I was young you could almost never see the downtown skyline from near my house unless the wind was blowing strongly in just the right direction to move out the cake of smog.

Now it is rare that you cant, typically involving all of California being on fire. The air is immensely more breathable than it was when I was younger. Kids today no longer know of "Smog days" where the air was so bad schools would not allow them to go outside.

And California's blend of gas really only applies to the warmer months, but you dont see the discrepancy shrink proportionallly in winter months, even taking into account our gas tax(which we desperately need to repair our roads).

NYC had bad air quality too. It's not near as bad as it used to be. I've considered moving to CA to be closer to my daughter, but not sure we can afford it. I feel like we should be pushing EV's as a path to energy independence more than we are, though conservatives don't seem to care about energy independence unless it means having more oil.

It won't go to discovery because it will be dismissed before then. At the initial stage where you can contend even if every fact alleged is true, the lawsuit still fails as a matter of law. Here, CNN has an absolute right to express opinions about Trump.
