I don't get them making this joke over and over again.

I lean red and while Im not saying those two dont have loans, from my personal experience in the professional world, the aforementioned Gender Studies degrees and other worthless degrees (mass communications, theater, World history, etc) without a linear career path DO generally have high loans years after graduating with because their realistically best chance at a high paying stable job is HR or entry level work like data entry with YOE being their only true way of moving up.

I know CE is gonna call out MuH b0oTsTrApS as always because god forbid anyone lean red on here, but thats just how the corporate world works.

Humanties tend to be very small graduating classes, which is why humanties departments are trending smaller and less funded now-a-days. My guess is that the student loan debt held by humanities graduates is a minority of the student debt load.

They want to invalidate education by painting people as accepting handouts for impractical studies. Not that gender studies are unimportant. There's much to be learned from studying society and how it treats people. But that's typically lost on conservatives who are prone to believe either a "life is fair, work harder" attitude or "we dominate you" attitude.

Doesnt invalidate the argument that their career path will be harder than a more in-demand degree, though. Hell, tons of people on YouTube that studied these subjects couldnt make it into their career and became some type of influencer, which in itself is even harder to get tons of success at with everyone trying to become one. Just look at people like Odds1out and Let me Explain; even they got degrees in STEM fields and couldnt get into respective jobs and ended up becoming Diamond-tier subscribers YouTubers and work for themselves.

As a former conservative, I sympathize with posters who think they are arguing in good faith if they truly are just "leaning right"

But my brother in christ, if you want to make your point you shouldn't start off with that. You and the rest of people with your idealogy lost that right when the majority of conservatives went full MAGA. If you really want to debate someone on anything, you're going to have a bad time.

There are definitely no useless degrees if you accept that certain subjects are important and should be studied/understood. If you can't see how gender studies contributes to society than I would just guess you don't really know what it's actually about. But a student can very well make their degree useless by learning nothing or being under-equipped, which has nothing to do with the degree's subject matter. I'm shocked the party of personal responsibility isn't outright just saying 'school isn't for everyone'.

Ultimately I don't think it matters that much because a ton of people go to college to discover themselves, since that is more or less when one becomes an adult. Engaging with high level ideas is good for a person's development (like when we clarify what we think about political topics so we can better understand our own beliefs). For everyone there going to get a job there is probably someone else who just wants to learn more about the world and grow as a person. Both uses of college are important.

I kind of struggle with the value of my degree because I was pretty dumb while I was in college and didn't get much out of it. It's kind of silly that Plato and Aristotle's school says you have to be at least 30 to attend but we send students off to college at 17/18. It basically filters out the hyper competent from the average as it is now. But no mater what you do in life you will face this filter anyway. At the end of the day college is as much a competition as the work place is, so yes there will be a subset of people that fail, but if you just have a look a placements rates post college you will find a lot of people are in fact finding ok jobs with their BAs, or moving on to professional studies.

that's not an argument. if more people got education for degrees that you arbitrarily think are not "worthless", there would just be more people that "studied these subjects" and still "couldn't make it into their career"

i think they just don't like that college is a gamble compared to the relative stability of the military, in terms of institutional guidance structures re: moving into adulthood.

but for every person that ends up a barista they are ignoring the persons working in the women's shelter, the INGO, the ethics board, etc. it seems to boil down to people having a very basic understanding of what jobs actually exist and how skills can be made use of. in fact I started uni wanting to be a diplomat because I had no more realistic ideas, but then I ended up in a professional program for nonprofit management. there is a huge diversity of jobs where you can in fact use your skills and knowledge. you probably just won't get the big job you initially set your sights on.

Basically, Samsung's issue seems to be you won't get the job you want, but to say you will get no decent job at all just goes against the data.

Gender studies and "useless" degrees have been the low hanging fruit for conservatives that don't understand nuance for years now. They hate education as a whole, so their goal is to boil it down to "marketable degrees get a pass." Education has more worth than just getting a job

I have a bachelor's in mechanical engineering and physics, and I have nothing but respect for those that major in humanities. They're often pretty abstract and challenging degree paths

this is what i mean by not knowing what jobs exist. if you think every BA holder gets funneled into HR you are just ignoring all sorts of labour types. in fact you seem confused because HR is often its own major or certification.

it's very true that certain sectors don't do a good job of marketing their corner of the labour market for whatever reason.

Also it's worth noting that because of this brand of critique, universities are in fact becoming less and less general and more and more career oriented. You will definitely get what you want and everyone will be worse off for it. want to work in publishing? fuck your english degree, why isn't it a book and media studies degree? etc
