It's even worse when it's people clearly trying to steal shit that are holding everything up at closing. And I work at a Home Depot that closes at 10pm all days except Sunday (8pm), and whenever I worked a closing shift, there was guaranteed at least one or two crackhead dipshits walking around thinking they're gonna walk out with a cart full of tools and other expensive stuff.

I passed by a Home Depot late one night and the lights were still on. Do people work there over night getting stuff done.

They do it in restaurants too.

I used to have one guy who would come in 5 minutes before close, try to order shit we didn't carry, complain about everything, take an hour and a half to eat, and then would tip his server $1.
That's just how it is in restaurants. As the dish guy I get out like two hours after the restaurant closes if a bunch of people were just sat. I have to just deal with it when a party of 30 arrives 20 minutes before closing .

Must be nice working retail when you can close the doors five to ten minutes early and expect to leave.

The guys who took advantage of your generosity were still jerks though.

Can vouch that it doesn't work like that in retail all the time. If your manager has no balls, they'll make you wait while the customer grabs a cart and keep you and your team there an hour after closing.

Depending on how busy the store is, then yeah there will sometimes be an overnight freight team working basically until an hour or so before the store opens the next day.

This is a prime example of how you let yourself get sucked into the retail world. The customer is being inconsiderate for sure, but staying an extra 10 mins later for 1 person isnt going to ruin your day. I remember how cynical it made me still and looking back it really wasnt a big deal compared to other jobs.

Its minutes of their time. Its really not a big deal unless youre absorbed into that world. Retail fucks with your head. Ive been there. Looking back it wasnt worth getting upset over. We cant change how selfish humans can be and at the end of the day its not worth being upset over literal minutes of our time being wasted. Look at what were doing now on the internet. Legit waste of time, but we choose to do it lol.

As long as you're fine basically living a nocturnal life, sure lol

I couldn't even stand the regular closing shift. It was depressing af getting out at 10:30 or sometimes 11pm and barely anything is open, nobody wants to hang out because they're trying to sleep, etc.

I work a midday shift now, and while that also has its problems (obviously my entire day is taken up with work), it does a hell of a lot better for my mental health to get off work just after rush hour ends but before the sun's fully set. Feels more normal to me.

That's why the store should close at 4pm (no more customers) but shifts end at 5pm when employees can clean up or w/e and let the last customers finish shopping meanwhile.

But it's always easier to push the problem to the employees instead of actually trying to fix it as a company

Ive admitted i have worked in retail. I work in nursing now and its a 24/7 career where its not unusual to stay after 15 mins to 8 hours after a shift ends because someone didnt show up for their shift or was late. Now 8 hours is a big deal. 15 mins doesnt bother me much since Im still getting paid and after 8-12 hours of being on my feet serving patients an extra 15 mins isnt going to hurt me. Its not privileged. Its not giving a shit over the small things.

none of that contradicts anything I've said.

You've clearly never had somewhere you HAVE to be with a strict deadline immediately after work. You've never had to race to the daycare after work to make sure you don't get charged extra fees you can't afford for a late pickup, or get your second job or your classes straight from work with barely enough time to commute, let alone feed yourself on the way. You've clearly never had to race home because your spouse's car is in the shop and they need yours to get to their job on time.

You assume those few minutes are just the first few of wide open personal time because, like I said, your life has never ACTUALLY been busy.

Besides the fact that, to reiterate, even though I personally wouldn't mind much staying after a few minutes if I was the only one in the store, as the supervisor it is my obligation to look out for my employees. People have personal lives outside of work, relationships, responsibilities, what it might be. I'm not going to make over half a dozen people sit around twiddling their thumbs because some jackass who couldn't even be bothered to google or call first to see when we close wants to walk around the store for $0.10 bolts. Yeah, but its also not a big deal. You made the choice to let the customer in and ultimately the responsibility you feel over your employees is on you not the customer you let in. Doesnt change the fact that the customer is entitled, but also doesnt make you innocent either. Its more of a you should have known better type of situation. No offense. Its human behavior.

This is why I said the retail world can make people cynical as you get wrapped up in it. The customer doesnt have a responsibility to you since theyre giving you their business. Its entitlement yeah I agree and its also human behavior since you could have told them no and they would had gone somewhere else. I get wanting to rant about it though.

I hated working at retail. I worked at a medical supply store and it was one of the worst experience I had. There was a stupid expectation that for some reason a small Ma and Pa shop would be able to price match with Amazon or Ebay. Customers would get mad at the wrong people when their insurance says they wouldn't cover an item they were looking for. Call us fatphobic when a +300lbs guy has to pay extra for their equipment because their equipments need to be able to hold up that much. Call us scammers when they bring back a broken rental item and we have to charge them for the damages they made to it. Call us liars when an item they bought online says that we can fix their item under warranty free of charge, when that is not true at all. Get pissy when we charge a small delivery service fee of $5's to deliver an item that is +30 miles away same day.

The worst part about this was that we were required to eat it all up. We couldn't say anything back to the customers other than the typical corporate jargons. I'm so glad I'm in a job position where I can reject customers that would be a giant pain in the ass to deal with. I was always told that I would hate the people I work with when I did retail, but it was the entitled customers that seem to think the customers is always right. And man don't get me started when I worked in fast food.

When I was the closing shift supervisor at Wendy's, we had a policy that the dining room closer was absolutely NOT supposed to do their closing duties if there were customers still in the dining room. We closed the dining room at 10:00 pm, and the dining room closer was almost always a highschool kid, that the law says can only work so many hours and during certain times. ALWAYS some assholes came in at like, fuckin 9:55, cashier TRIES to say "to go right?" and "naw, we'll dine in" and fuckin stays until like 11:30 shooting the shit. can't do shit while they are there. can't ask them to leave. Also can't lock the doors a few minutes early. All things all but garunteed we'd catch shit from the DM who fuckin LOVED screaming at goddamn kids over every little instance of a guest whining that we didn't suck their dick in thanks for gracing our building.

Oh, just send the dining room closer home early and finish up their work for them? For sure, typically what we had to do cause these were good kids that A: wanted to actually get their homework done and B: typically knew child labor laws pretty well. And the adults of us can handle the absolute horseshit chewing out the DM would STILL dish out because the closing crew clocked out 20 minutes late.

retail is caught between two pieces of shit. customers, and upper management.

i have LITERALLY came home to my then 1st grade son sobbing outside the door because my scheduled shift gave me time to get home and unlock the doors but a stupid customer service job "required" me to stay late and I wasn't there, LITERALLY by my state laws risking several neglect and endangerment charges.

I have LITERALLY had co-workers at these stupid customer service jobs who need two of these dumb things to survive get repeatedly written up and let go because they are late because their other stupid customer service job "required" that they stay late.

I'm not making ANY assumptions. You spelled it all out. Those few minutes have never been a big deal to you. Because you have been PRIVILEGED enough to never be in a position where they actually were a big deal.

And yeah, I DO have you all figured out. You took insult to being called privileged and felt the need to retaliate. As if it's somehow a bad thing to just admit and acknowledge that any aspect of your life up until now has ever NOT been significantly easier and more forgiving than other people's. This tells me that politically you lean right. using "triggered" as a pejorative reinforces this. But also concern trolling, so you probably don't think of yourself that way. If I were a betting person I'd say you probably view yourself as some form or another of "enlightened centrist" or "moderate". Your phone most likely auto fills in "both sides" as soon as you type the letter B.

You claim I'm "making a lot of assumptions", so you probably in some shape or form have either had a second job, or had somebody outside of work relying on you, so THINK you know what a legitimately tight day to day schedule looks like, but you've always been blessed with a generous amount of time between obligations so those "few minutes" have never really been the make or break for any of them.

It's the talkative customers I hated the most. Look, there are fucking people behind you, stop taking up everyone's time

it's not exactly rude or anything, but i also hate when people ask what i'm listening to. no one ever knows what i'm talking about, and i'm not gonna gas on and explain what it is, because no one actually cares, it's just a pointless interaction that reminds me how much of an outsider i am

example:
"what are you listening to?"
"a guy called rameses b"
"my last name is ramsay"

COOL DUDE WOW

But what if one of your competitors puts a store in hell and they undersell you. Then those customers start telling others through word of mouth. You'll go out of business

Then they can deal with all the asshole customers.
