I was sort of down on the Song of Ice and Fire thing at first, sort of a cheap and kind of cheesy way to have a tie-in with Game of Thrones. But having thought about it a bit, I kind of like it. The Targaryens, even the good ones, have always kind of been grandiose and prone to bouts of mania (a fairly popular fan theory suggests that they carry some sort of genetic predisposition to being afflicted with something akin to Bi-Polar Disorder) so I think that it sort of fits the characters well to have them be deadly serious about their quasi-divine purpose.
