Which led to terrible writing choices because they realized they needed to get certain characters to certain places, but didn't have the time to build it up in the traditional slow burn story telling form that GoT was known for. If circa seasons 4-5 we'd have been told how ~~Dany, Jon, Arya, Cersei, Jaime, Sam, Davos and Brienne's~~ respective arcs ended, I think everyone would have not only been happy to hear it, but would have essentially reacted with a "Well, yeah, of course that's where it's going..." It was definitely the right ending for most of the show, and I'm absolutely convinced that it's an ending that Martin told them years ago, and is more or less the closest the TV show - with it's smaller cast - could come to the ending that Martin has planned for the last books that will never come out. Furthermore, I'm actually pretty convinced that the scripts for the last few episodes were written years ago, around the time they still had more input from GRRM - even the dialogue in those episodes sounds more like it did in the early seasons (references to "Bran The Broken" etc.) The big problem I have is that season 6-8 (save for the last couple of episodes), where they didn't have books to go off of, veered the plot in a different direction, the White Walkers kinda took over as the biggest plot thread rather than the Iron Throne even though that had no impact at all on the ending, character arcs went in different directions leading motivations away from where they needed to be for that ending, they clearly had no idea how to get Bran from where he was arc-wise to where he needed to be, and suddenly the finale that they had planned - while perfect for the first 5 seasons, and definitely the conclusion they had been building toward from the start - didn't really fit organically with what they'd changed the storyline to. They obviously knew how to end the show well, they just had no idea how to get from where the books left them to where they needed to be for that ending. The problem wasn't the ending itself, it was the couple of seasons leading up to it.
