#50 - Paco Testas

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/3/3/1/AAcguBAADk1z.png

I actually thought this would be an unpredicted guess, but you people must know me too well.

I'm surprised I got through two writeups and an honorable mention without stating this fact but...

Brennus is gay.

He also crushes very easily. He (was) a closested, repressed 18 year old gay guy. It didn't take much to impress him. He might be a bit more refined now (emphasis on a bit) but early in the campaign when the group went to El Paso, our car broke down and we ended up stopping at a mechanic to get it fixed. While there, we learned this mechanics son, Jaime, was a coyote who could help get people across the border into Mexico. Being the good samaritans we are (and because we needed to get into Mexico) we decided we should try to find Jaime. We were directed to how to find one of his friends, Paco, who could help us find Jaime. We also met someone named Chris Smith there, who also needed to find Jaime.

When we found Paco, Chris Smith beat us there and was holding Paco against the wall, pointing a gun at him. Paco was scared, obviously and the party convinced Chris to let us try to get the information out of him. Brennus started thinking Paco was cute and crushing on him, but Paco proved resistant. He didn't know who we were, Chris was threatening him, why should he tell us where Jaime was? He was freaking out and not listening to us.

And how does our heroic group calm him down convince him to tell us this information? Saoirse flashes him. His jaw drops and he tells us everything we want to know. It's also around this time that we realize that when Chris had the gun pointed at him, he peed himself. Brennus has never lost a crush as fast as he did in this instance.

But after that? Paco became a friend, of shorts. Eventually (perhaps more details on this later...), El Paso fell and our group led the survivors south though Mexico and South America on a Convoy to get them to Z'onn Z'orr. Paco continued to be scared, cried a lot, and peed himself in fear a lot, but Chris Smith saw a strength in Paco. Due to Paco's time playing video games, he had reflexes necessary to operate a turret on one of the buses (the Owlbus) that the Convoy had. Paco was reluctant and Chris had to threaten Paco to get him to help (which made him cry and pee) but nevertheless, Paco prevailed and used the turret to help keep the Convoy safe on more than one occasion.

Paco even got kidnapped at one point during the Convoy! Paco asked Brennus to walk off the path with him a bit so he could pee since he didn't want to be alone. The two were talking, with Brennus not watching, when Paco stopped responding... because he was taken by a gang called the CdA. They wanted us to pay them for the privledge of moving our Convoy through their territory. Rosetta and Brennus worked together to bluff them that by harassing them they were angering the ancient spirit of La Llarona which got them to back off temporarily. At least, long enough to rescue Paco and get the Convoy away from them.

Also, Paco spent a lot of time making repairs on the Owlbus. Here's another spell Brennus learned:
https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/771447954652921897/808542884575051776/Wheel_Care.png

When Paco was making repairs, Brennus would always clasp him on the shoulder to tell him what a great job he is doing and cast the spell without Paco realizing. Paco got really good and really fast at the repairs. Brennus figured he deserved some credit to keep Chris off of his back.

Brennus also recently heard that Paco has been looking for him in Z'onn Z'orr. What does Paco want with Brennus and will it lead to him going higher up the rankings? Only time* will tell.

(*Time being when I have enough free time to roleplay)

Hint for #49: This character tried to kiss Brennus.

#49 - Tomorrow Woman

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/1/3/5/AAQcMAAADiG3.png

When the party went to Haven, a gated community for mad scientists, it was under orders to kill the residents. They were too dangerous if the Society should get their hands on them. The party that went decided that they instead were going to try to rescue as many as they could to get more minds for the resistance, but when they arrived they found Haven already under assult by the Society. It became a race to see who could get to the residents first.

Roger Huntoon was the name of the person in charge of Haven. We found him, injured by Cheshire, but alive. He told us he had a way to track the residents, so even the ones the Society took we could get back. But before he will help us, we have to destroy something that is too dangerous to be left intact. He told us where to find it and there we found Tomorrow Woman. Broken and confused. She asked Brennus to dance and together they sing I Could Have Danced All Night from My Fair Lady. She asked us if she has a soul and asked us to apologize to the Justice League for trying to kill them - her father, Dr. Ivo, forced her to. But she didn't want to, so she blew herself upstead. Superman told her she might have a soul... but she's not sure.

We discover that she was built by two of the individuals in Haven - Dr. Ivo and TO Morrow. She begs us not to return her to them. The party agrees they are not going to destroy her, causing Huntoon to deny us any further assistance and losing the ability to track Ivo and the other members of Haven that the Soceity took. Eventually, the Society bombs the remnants of Haven and Huntoon chooses to stay behind rather than be a part of resucing Tomorrow Woman.

I haven't regretted that decision once.

Tomorrow Woman is repaired, physically. Mentally... she's learning. It's a work in progress. She struggles with what she is and who she can be. Ivo and Morrow are disgusting old men and she was programmed as such - when Brennus asked her to joining training sessions, her reaction was to try to kiss him, because that was something that always made fathers feel better. Her other reactions were:

"Do yoU THiNk I WOULD be A good heRo?"
"my proCessoR IS not OrGanIC. IT iS maDE of stEEl aNd wIRe AND PLaSTIC. is ThAt GOOD EnOUGh To BE alive?"
"I WouLd LiKE to lEArN MOrE. I wAnt tO be BeTTeR."

Learning and being better are defining features of Tomorrow Woman. Training sessions were hit or miss for her, she often just tried to kiss the person she was paired up against, but she's currently part of a field team focused on Tokyo, led by Dr. Light. And as part of her field missions, she's killing. And she can't decide how she feels about that. Other teammates have described her as being almost too willing to kill, but when Rosetta checks in with her, she seems more conflicted in what she has done. She talks about how she wants to be good, wants to be a hero and isn't sure the right way to accomplish that. She just knows she needs to protect people and sometimes that means the necessity of taking a life. It's a hint of what Huntoon was afraid of and what could come - but I have faith in Tomorrow Woman finding her soul and being a hero.

I find Tomorrow Woman tragic but utterly fascinating. I wish I spent more time roleplaying with her. Maybe I'll need to find a reason to, soon.

Hint for #48: This character has spent time in Z'onn Z'orr's holding cells.

#48 - Kid Karnevil

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/9/8/6/AAcguBAADlAC.jpg

I'm not going to be able to give a full backstory here. I'm not entirely sure where Karnevil was found. I don't know what he was doing or what the circumstances were that led to that group bringing him back to Z'onn Z'orr. All I know is that suddenly, there was a very, very angry teenager in Z'onn Z'orr who absolutely hates all of us.

Almost all of the villains in the world have banded together to form the Society. Obviously, we act against the Society very frequently. Occasionally we go undercover and find the weak links in the Society cells - someone who doesn't agree fully with the mission or someone who wants more power than they were given. People that we can turn against the Society and help us. Karnevil is not one of these people. Karnevil fully and totally believes in the Society. It brought order to the world. And what more proof does he need than the fact that he is our prisoner? He was brought to Z'onn Z'orr against his will. He was deemed a flight risk and fitted with a collar like the ones the Suicide Squad wears in case he tried to escape. The Society is the heroes in this story and we are all evil for thinking otherwise.

Pepper and Brennus would try to get Karnevil to see things from their perspectives, but they never had any luck. Brennus even worked to get him permission to go out in the field as our scrounger - we sent him back to locations that were deemed safe (in gameplay mechanics, that we completed) to look for any items that we missed. He seemed to enjoy this level of freedom and Brennus tried to send him to cities that had Society cells that we were allies with. People that he looked up to and respected who didn't think we were as evil as he did. Things seemed to slowly be rubbing off on him except for one problem...

He never stopped trying to escape. His collar always had scratch marks on it from where he tried to pry it off. If Brennus sent him to a location that was too remote, he would steal a car and make a run for it. He would kidnap people around Z'onn Z'orr and threaten them to remove his collar and we'd have to go stop him. Throughout all of this, Brennus continued to defend him, continued to say he wasn't too far gone until he made a crucial error...

Karnevil decided to try to make Pocus, a rabbit with magical abilties, get his collar off of him. To get Pocus to cooperate, he threatened the life of Patch. If you've read the other lists, you'll know how beloved Patch is. Brennus is no exception - he loves Patch as much as anyone (except for Data). In the aftermath of this, Lush decided she had enough and dragged Karnevil to the holding cells, which lead to...

Brennus: "Hey, Vostok, I had a question about... hey, whoa, what's happening here?" Brennus asks seeing Karnevil being escorted away
Lush: "Kid thought it was okay to kidnap Pocus and Patch trying to get his collar off so he can escape. He's done."
Brennus: "Look, I know that Karnevil keeps trying to escape and is like, super in love with the Society and hates all of us, but that doesn't mean... ...Patch?"
Lush gestures to the rat on her shoulder
Brennus: "He kidnapped Patch!?!"
Patch waves to Brennus.
Brennus waves back. He then turns to Karnevil, gives him a look and leaves with no further complaints

Some things are too far, even for Brennus.

And now, Karnevil is broken. He's begged Pepper to just kill him and put him out of his misery. The fight has left him. He still hates us, but he's given up. I don't know what will come with Karnevil in this story, but I hope he doesn't just get left languishing in the holding cells until the end of the campaign.

Hint for #47: This character has died, more than once.

#47 - Dewormer

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/2/5/9/AAcguBAADlET.png

As our Convoy moved through South America, we made a pitstop in Santa Prisca in order to recruit Bane to the Secret Six. We found his prison island also under seige and he agreed to come with us if we agreed to a list of demands - one of which was helping his various lieutenants with whatever they needed to get done before we could leave.

One of his lieutenants was Trogg, a robotics expert. He had a robot named Dewormer that was initially used to pull worms out the ground, hence his name. But he had an idea to use it to gather truffles to lure the boars in the area to attack the equated in the area that are attacking their island to give them time to escapse. Sure. But there are a lot of mines in the area, so someone needed to guide Dewormer. Also, sure.

Brennus volunteers for this job. Everytime he gives Dewormer a direction on which way to go, Dewormer follows up with a question. What is his purpose? Is this all that life is? Are we friends, Brennus? It starts being reminisint of Tomorrow Woman, but then it goes.. further. If you're my friend Brennus, what will happen when you die and I outlive you? What will hapen when I outlive all life, when the world is dead but Dewormer lives on? After the truffles are over, Dewormer begs for Brennus to remove his chip - to kill him. He's seen what the future is going to be for him and it's cruel. Please, Brennus!

Brennus doesn't want to, but when Dewormer in his terror almost destoys the truffles they just collected, Brennus reluctantly pops the chip out of his head, depowering him. Brennus takes the body and the chip back to Trogg to explain what happens. Trogg is unsurprised - Dewormer has a programming flaw. He's a nihilist. Trogg pulls out another chip and inserts it into the robot, powering him back up.

Brennus is thrilled and tells his new friend it's good to see him again. Dewormer 2.0 process this statement and realizes that since he doesn't remember Brennus, it was a different Dewormer who Brennus knew. Which led him to the realization that the other Dewormer died and that life is meaningless and led to him begging Brennus to kill him!

This... uh... continued for a while. Inbetween other players doing their tasks, we'd cut back to Brennus killing another Dewormer just by talking to it. No matter what he said, the nihilistic Dewormer took it as a reason for his death. When our tasks were done, the group dragged a despondant Brennus away from Dewormer, with dozens of broken chips on the ground around him.

An amusing part of session to be sure. When we arrived back at Z'onn Z'orr, Trogg joined our robotics labs along with a Dewormer. And all was well... until our base was attacked by Kobra. He arranged allies on the inside which included an army of Dewormers. Brennus wasn't worried. He knew how to take them down. He tried to make them see the futility of life. But it didn't work. Kobra had fixed their nihilism. Now they only existed to destroy Checkmate. And our group had to fight down an army of Dewormers to stop them from killing the civilians of our base.

We've gotten information after the dust settled that Trogg destroyed all chips except for the original, so the death happy version of Dewormer should be back to his normal self. Perhaps another place that Brennus needs to check in soon...

Hint for #46: This character dislikes magic.

#46 - The Spectre

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/4/1/2/AAcguBAADlGs.jpg

To fully grasp the history of The Spectre, we must go back to Campaign 1 and Varra. While in Gotham, Oracle came up with the idea that everyone would get a Superbuddy - a mentor. When Varra asked for hers, Oracle gave her a green lantern with instructions on how to use it. She also brought Jason Blood back into the city to watch over Varra and make sure she was safe. Varra was confused, but followed the instructions.

And this is when Varra met Hal Jordan. But... Hal was dead. Jason quickly warned Varra to avoid the topic. Varra and Hal talked and it was clear something was wrong with Hal, but nevertheless, Hal was excited to teach Varra. When he left, Jason explained - Hal Jordan was the human host for The Spectre. The Spectre needed a host and when Hal died after becoming Parallax and trying to destroy the sun and then sacrificing himself to not destoy the sun, he was a soul whose life was a balance between good and evil - a necessary step for being The Spectre's host. But Hal is still at a crossroads himself in adjusting to becoming The Spectre. Varra can learn from Hal, but the more Varra talks to Hal, the more he'll remember himself. The more human he'll become. And the more human the host of The Spectre is, the better off humanity will be.

Varra and Hal continued over the months in Gotham to bond. They had chili dogs and milkshakes together. I won't get too deep into their relationship, but if I was making a ranking for Varra in Campaign 1, this would be far, far too low for The Spectre. But there was one huge thorn in their relationship - The Spectre, before Hal was his host, destroyed Vlatava, Count Vertigo's country. Varra could never let Vertigo know that she was become friends with The Spectre.

After No Man's Land ended (meaning inbetween campaigns), with Varra and Vertigo were reunited with Brennus, the kid was playing in his parents room when he found the hidden lantern. He started playing with it and accidentally summoned The Spectre. But it didn't appear to him as Hal - it appeared as the picture above looks, and yelled at the child for playing with things he doesn't understand. Brennus was terrified and Varra quickly found him, dismissing The Spectre and calming Brennus. She knew she could no longer keep Hal's lantern and took a trip to Star City to return it to Oliver Queen. Brennus never forgot this face but reluctantly promised his mother to never tell his father what he saw.

And then Campaign 2 began. The very first session, when Brennus and the others in his group woke up from their tubes in Metropolis, they were fighting a witch. And then The Spectre appeared and ate her. He caught sight of Brennus - before he could even cast spells - but sensed the potential of magic inside of him and was about to kill him... when he sensed a more powerful source of magic and disappeared.

Eventually, we learned that The Spectre no longer had a human host. Oliver Queen resurrected Hal Jordan, severing his link with The Spectre. And with no host to give humanity to The Spectre, he's decided that all magic is evil and needs to be destroyed. He's one of the main antagonists of this campaign and whenever we find him, it's extremely tense. We can't possibly fight him - he's basically a God. What chance do we have?

There are two moments from this campaign involving The Spectre that stick out to me. The first was in Calvin City, when Susie/Fright put our party in a nightmare landscape, Brennus found himself in a sitcom world with his parents. Every day started the same and ended the same, with The Spectre appearing and killing them all. Over and over and over again. One of the times, The Spectre sat down next to Brennus and talked to him, bringing him some popcorn. They talked about his parents - why did Varra tell him to hide The Spectre's existance from Vertigo? Why has Vertigo never taken him to Vlatava? Why did his parents fight so much behind closed doors? Brennus... weirdly understood The Spectre more after this. It was kind of nice talking to him. And then he killed Brennus again. And a few more times after that.

Obviously, this world was created by Susie to torture us - but that one instance in particular, I wondered if some aspect of that conversation actually came from The Spectre. He's a God, if he wanted to appear there, I'm sure he could. I don't think I ever even expressed my belief that that loop might have been more real to the others, but it's always been in the back of my mind. I also could just be wrong!

The second, when we were moving with the Convoy, we found a cult releasing a Krypton Goddess of Ice. We tried to stop the cult and killed them, but not before Cythonna awoke and decided to kill everyone in our Convoy.

We couldn't fight this Goddess ourselves. We tried. We were barely surviving. But a group Brennus wasn't on realized that if a powerful being of magic talked bad about The Spectre, he knew. So we taunted Cythonna about how she was nothing compared to The Spectre. Eventually in her anger, she said "Fuck. The. Spectre." And then he was there. He ripped her apart. This isn't a trick we can rely on often, but it's always a good trick to have in our back pocket.

There's been talk about defeating The Spectre by finding a new host for him. Someone recently deceased whose life was a balance of good and evil. Who will this be and will it work? It was revealed in Campaign 1 that part of the reason Hal bonded with Varra is that she had the potential to be a host for The Spectre - her life with the League of Assassins compared to her time as a hero in Gotham brought a balance. Is she still balanced? Where is she now, during Campaign 2? Brennus has been looking for her. Is Varra destined to become The Spectre after everything she's been through?!?

Also a fun Brennus quirk - he often calls The Spectre just Spectre, leading whatever NPC he's talking to remind him it's The Spectre. Brennus doesn't see the difference. But on this topic... what is The Spectre under in our gauntlet...

Hint for #45 - This character shares a codename with another hero.

We do not have much connection, you and I. Still, this encounter feels special. I hope you won't mind if I think of you as a friend.

The Spectre isn't a god, he's an angel.

This feels a little low for Jaime...

But I'll do it. Blue Beetle.
