Former President Donald Trump received a federal grand jury subpoena this spring for sensitive documents the government believed he retained after his departure from the White House, a source familiar with the matter confirmed to NBC News.

Conservative journalist John Solomon first reported Thursday afternoon that Trump was sent the subpoena months before the FBI searched his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida earlier this week. The source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the subpoena was related to documents that Trump's legal team discussed with Justice Department officials at a previously reported on June 3.

Those officials were "coming down to retrieve the documents that were being requested" in the subpoena, the source said, adding that the meeting was arranged with the Trump team's understanding that turning over relevant documents that day would fulfill the subpoena.

This could be a disappointing setup for Democrats because if it's just over highly classified info (and not necessarily Trump himself) they won't be allowed to talk about it in any capacity, so it'll look sketchy by virtue of their limits.

There were two outcomes that I expected:

1. He says that theyre not interested and dont think theres enough information to do something
2. Basically what he said

The takeaway message was that he supported the decision and the emphasis on how these things dont happen lightly.

He isnt going to outright say, we are seriously investigating Trump and theres a massive chance that he and his cronies are going to prison. That moron actually tried to assault the FBI headquarters today in retaliation for the raid on Trumps property, so they dont want a repeat of the insurrection. I felt like he was saying that theyre seriously looking into it and that we should expect things to come.

If you live in a city with a lot of Trump supporters, it may be best to avoid public places until we get some answers. Or maybe stock up and try to stay in your house. He kept saying this is all that I can say right now. I dont think he would have said that if he thought everything was going to be swept under the rug.

Ironically, Clinton would be spared from the law Trump signed because it isn't applied ex post facto. So Trump gets to test out his own law.
