Gen 1 was really designed as an RPG first. There's only 2 Snorlax and 1 of each legendary and whatever their DVs are is what they are. You beat the game, you fill out the dex, and you're done. PvP barely worked and there wasn't even breeding.

At least in that case they gave you a way to farm those single-use TM's. Dynamax raid dens in Sw/Sh (which you could do solo, they didn't require being online and doing them with others), wild area sellers in Sw/Sh, and underground sellers in BD/SP were all ways to get more copies. It's not optimal, but it's something. Before gen 5, they truly were one-and-done deals if you didn't use cloning glitches or cheat devices, which was absolute bullshit.

Even worse when you consider that for things like getting Roost on a Mew in gen 5 you HAD TO import them from gen 4 knowing it.

I do not miss jumping through hoops to get moves on Pokemon.
I'd like to give the series another chance now that they've fixed but apparently trade evos are still a thing, walling off all the Pokemon I'd actually want to use.

At least you could easily get more of them, unlike in Gens 1-4 where you were SOL if you used one on the wrong Pokemon or made it forget the move.

That's one thing that they should steal from the fan games.

Link Stones, if you use it on a Pokemon that evolves through trade (and they are holding the necessary item if needed) then if evolves them right there.

Legends Arceus actually have this. You can just use items on Pokemon that would evolve via trade normally. However, you can still trade them to evolve, since those items do require either luck or a grind.

...I don't expect them to keep that in Scarlet/Violet, though.

I'm not talking about the Pokedex, I'm talking about sitting there doing a playthrough and wanting to use a Pokemon that isn't walled off by some combo of internet access, having to put faith in a GameFAQs user, paid online and the deflating feeling of achieving the evolution through the most banal, tedious means possible. Even the evo stones are something you have to go find within the game.
That's not even getting started on older games where online trading's down and your options are do some serious hoop jumping to get them or outright cheat.

I think Kadabra should evolve at lv48.

Every single existing trade evolution could easily be made a non-trade evolution if Gamefreak really wanted to. It's not that hard.

For the ones that require trading while holding a specific item, just require leveling up while holding that item and maybe also make it so the Pokemon has to be above a certain level for early game balance reasons. For the ones that don't need an item at all and just need to be traded, just give it another evolution level like 10-15 levels above the previous one. For the specific situation of Karrablast and Shelmet, where they evolve when specifically traded for each other, make it so that they both evolve if they both gain a level within a short period of time (like 10 minutes of real time) while together in the party.

Supposedly PvP was added in within a week of the deadline because Nintendo demanded it and it was originally just two AIs using your pokemon in a simulated battle until Nintendo told them to do it right.

I did beat r2 back in the day, but a lot of it involved relying on Pokemon who learned some of the really good TM moves via level up. I'd use Golem instead of Rhydon (cause Golem gets EQ via level up), train Jolteon up to level 52 and rely on Thunder's shakey accuracy, Alakazam with psychic via level up, etc... then using TMs only when absolutely necessary. It was much more crude than it needed to be, but it worked.

Also using a Dragonair with Dragon Rage to BS the Pika Cup was fun. ^_^
