One of the few games of the last five years or so to completely blow me away. Stayed faithful to the original while expanding it in both story and world-building. Absolutely fantastic romp with good characters and dialogue to boot.

Haven't played, watched a lot of cutscenes. Seems great outside of all the EU / ghosts / timeline stuff they added, which is the main thing that turned me off from playing.

Be a bit more fair pj, it keeps enough of the original stuff around that's it's definitely not a 1.

Anyway, 8.5/10 from me.

Has a bit too much filler due to having to expand the Midgar section into a whole game and all the ghost stuff is stupid, but everything else definitely surpassed my expectations of what this would be.

I don't think he did, and since he offered zero explanation, his vote shouldn't be counted imho

It had an awful lot going for it and managed to keep the kind of shit I'd usually hate to a minimum. I respect it commercially as a way to maintain interest in the remake trilogy, in addition to just generally enjoying it.

I think you can say this about the Compilation of FFVII content, but to me, they did seem to grasp why the original game is so beloved.

They took some other liberties in the process that were hit or miss (which I'm fine with, even the stuff I didn't care for. I didn't necessarily want a beat for beat remake), but they showed a respect for the original in Remake.

This is tough. I think if you haven't already played the original, the story is bad

If you have, the core is decent, but it wanders a little too far into kingdom hearts style nonsense. Everything about how sephiroth is handled is aggressively mediocre

I'm not a massive fan of the original or anything so I don't mind that they changed it, but I don't like what they did to it. Nothing felt meaningful because any story development could just be undone by the ghosts (such as the Barret death fake-out). It just felt like a cheap excuse to do whatever they want with the story even if it doesn't make much sense (Zack being alive), which makes it hard to really engage with the story. This isn't just a problem with Remake unfortunately, and I'm not a fan of any stories that do this. I would have given it a 3 but they did a great job fleshing out the characters and Midgar itself.

All the main story beats that actually return from the original are great. The very end of the game is a bit too KH for my tastes (and definitely makes me slightly nervous for the future) and the side quests are pretty bad. Still far better than it had any right being

The idea of a remake that expects you to have already played and know the original like the back of your hand is a bold one. In this regard, FF7R offers up a strange brew of nostalgic revisitation & strict reverence, fan-fic what ifs, modern day video game storytelling methods, and expansions to the original that genuinely work better and hit harder. All the beats are here - Cloud joining Avalanche, falling through Aerith's church, storming SHINRA headquarters. For 75% of the time, FF7 plays out just like you remember it, but slicker, more polished, the character's lively dialogue portrayed even better in pumped-up cutscenes and high-fidelity animation, bringing the world and population of Midgar to breathtaking heights. The expansion of Avalanche's supporting members - Jessie, Biggs, Wedge - are some of the most compelling moments of the story, and it makes sense to have these expanded moments being that FF7R doesn't even encompass the whole of disc 1 of the original. It's what a remake should do - expand, expound, fill in the gaps you couldn't do on the original hardware. It's what makes the functionality of the ghosts and the shoehorned nature of Sephiroth feel like such a chickenshit move. It's that very same reverence to the original's beats coming back to bite it on its ass. It's an admission of defeat - oh, you can't remake part 1 of the original without including its arguably most famous character; oh, you can't remake part 1 of the original if you're going to change any deaths. It ends up having the ironic effect of making FF7R feel so far removed from its original counterpart that it may as well not even bother bearing the name. And yet, the game will then do something so touching as to show the total devastation of a plate being crushed on a whole population, making you feel more in touch with what you're fighting for and how it effects the characters, and it's so far beyond what the original ever even attempted, and I love it and hate it at the same because the whole remake could've did stuff like this instead of being so damn wishy-washy all the time. There's fantastic stuff here, and there's terrible stuff, but at the core you can still see the FF7 that is and was, and it's probably one of the hardest games to rank story wise for that reason.

The good stuff is really great. The HYPE moments like the stuff with the reactors is great, almost everything with Jessie is fantastic, Aeris and Tifa's scenes are excellent, etc. There are two issues. First, the pacing is bad. Some scenes are dragged out to their great detriment, notably Jessie's death and the stuff surrounding it. Second, everything with the ghosts was dumb. Barret's death was such an amazing holy shit moment, and they just undid it. Nothing in the ending sequence was interesting either. It should've been a hype sequence, but instead it was a big old 'meh'

I've heard a lot of bitching (not really here, just around the internet) about the story not being a 1:1 retelling of FF7 both gameplay and story wise. It sounds like a whiny minority, but it is noticeable regardless. However, of all people, Jim Sterling gave me an interpretation that made me like it. "Think of it like a comic book movie adaptation or new Batman movie 20 years down the line. Nothing is replacing the original FF7. This is trying something different, and now you have both games. If you want to play the first one, this isn't trying to replace it."

Outside of some of the weird phantom bullshit which justified some of the weirdness, I loved how ballsy they were at reinforcing Biggs Wedge (and especially) Jessie's roles. Cloud's crazy mindfuckery plays way better with full on PS4/PS5 era presentation. Midgar is wholly represented, and you really get the vibe of this shitty, downtrodden city and Shinra's bullshit. Aerith returns to feeling her old sweet yet super snarky self.

The ending is fucking weird, but again, I'm happy they are going all in with retooling this story. OG FF7 is a story that honestly gets worse the more I replay it. I want them to take chances and take a risk. We HAVE FF7. It's not going anywhere. It doesn't have to go anyhere. Let this have a chance to fuck around with the formula and have the potential to surprise.

If nothing else, the graphics and story, the "FF7ness" of this game holds it aloft as some of the best stuff Square's done with the franchise in years. I even managed to deal with the combat's weird quirks because I wanted to be rewarded with more of the story beats.

The only thing about the story in Remake that bothers me is Barret's fake death scene and the Whispers actively interfering in the games' events more times than one.

Every retelling has been done to perfection. They absolutely nailed Cloud and Aerith. Hojo and ma man Sephiroth have been done absolute justice as well.

The Whisper thing certainly could be a harbinger of things to come, which is what does scare me a little. Every PSX era story kinda fumbles at or after Disc 2-3 (8 and 9 more than 7 does, but 7 still doesn't grab me with the sciency explanation of Cloud's bullshit). That tells me that even though the Whispers strike me as a Nomura thing, it's not like Kitase is above goofy shit either. I mean, it could have been Sakaguchi's call too. FF7 isn't some holy impressive masterpiece. It does some good things (all of Disc 1), but falls flat when going way too fucking hard into the wonky science schlock.

I think a lot of that does have to go with how FF7 was limited in its storytelling options. What helps Remake is Cloud's weird psychotic visions almost seem like horror movie presentations now. It helps add a layer of "What is real, what is old fairy tale bullshit, how can we take advantage of this?" What I DON"T want is something like a full on Kingdom Hearts or Dragon Quest V movie meta-narrative that ends up going way too fucking far. The Whispers already 'kinda' do, but you know what I mean. Imagine Red XIII winking at the camera, or the fight scenes devolving into a DMC/Bayonetta style parody where none of it has any weight or context and just "looks cool." Like...Advent Children on crack or something.

I think there are elements of KH's presentation and writing in XV, but it's hard to say because that game's own vision didn't really come together. Based on what I've heard of the DLCs, it sounds like there's some timeline shenanigans though.

I think it really started with XIII looking aesthetically closer to KH than anything before it though. plus the shift to action-rpg. Not saying it's all identical but there was a slow adoption of various elements probably just due to Nomura's own style seeping in more strongly to everything he does

Yes. If it stayed like X, the company wouldn't have keep trotting out that," FF for old and new fans alike" tagline they use to cover up their tracks. It is codeword for, "We kinda don't know what FF is supposed to be right now, buy it anyway."

8.5/10. Significantly improves on the original. The best parts of it are the new side stories that flesh out the world and indeed the timeline stiff, although the ghosts were a bit of an overly direct way of visualising that. Great twist on an old story.
