I bought a ticket last week when it was like $500M but didn't bother checking it when no one hit the jackpot. Turns out I hit three numbers and won $10 lol

I'll turn that in for another ticket for the next drawing and come away $6 richer

And honestly unless you buy an unreasonably large number of tickets you aren't substantially changing your odds of winning.

Pretty insane that if you hit and take the single payout, you'd end up walking with less than $400 million. Right now the single payout amount is estimated at $602.7 millon (Which is still more than plenty, just amazing how much gets shaved off when you choose the single payment option and then couple that with the taxes that get lopped off after that) and It's estimated right now that you'd walk with $379.6 million, but that's if you live in a state with no income tax. If you have state tax, you'll come away with even less.

My biggest question is, where does the initial $400+ million go when you choose to take the single payout option? Back into the lottery?

The lottery tax is supposed to go to specific infrastructure projects

Like in NY the tax goes to schools.

I guess when you take the yearly, some of it is paid with Interest (and they tax that as well) so long term wise its more profitable for them to do it that way

Oh its certainly more profitable long term to take the annuity payments, but a lot of times people elect for the one time lump sum for various different reasons. Personally I would also take the lump sum because of my health so I would want to have that money to leave to my kid because in my state I cannot leave my lottery annuity to my kid. When I die, those payments cease.

Im sure I could find a way around that, but its likely easier to take the big lump sum. Also I know a lot of people elect for the lump sum because while the payments give you the entire jackpot over the long period of time, you can potentially make a lot more investing with the lump sum right away.

That has always been the general philosophy of taking the lump sum, but I think a lot of people also want that big upfront chunk of money so they can go make all their dream purchases. Of course a lot of people also piss away their entire winnings so this is probably something I'd take to a financial planner for advice.

This is why I believe every lottery winner should hire a wealth management firm and a personal accountant, plus get a lawyer they trust.

This is my plan if I ever win. Have an attorney set up an anonymous trust to accept the winnings. Get a financial advisor. Pay off all debts. And then donate a ton. Invest most of what's left. Spend a little. Which is a lot when you have $400-600m lmao

The end one just like on the ticket.

I always play the same 6 I used to years ago and I quick pick the other 4 plays. Sometimes I'll fill in numbers for the while sheet. I have better luck with QP though.
