An HOA, or homeowners association, is a self-governing organization in common-interest communities where homeowners collectively pay fees to maintain the units or neighborhood. HOAs are typically run by resident homeowners, unpaid volunteers who are elected to a board of directors that oversees the HOA's management.Apr 4, 2022

The main thing for them is to try to keep a neighborhood nice. No rusted cars parked in driveways, etc. In practice though they CAN be nightmares. They will bust you for things like being able to see your outdoor garbage can from the road. Or force you to have a certain type of grass. Or force you to only paint your house one of three colors.

They can also fine you and put liens on your property.

In theory, and probably practice at the beginning, they started great but they can absolutely be a nightmare. I would never buy a house in an HOA neighborhood.

Nothing because I'm not a sucker that would live somewhere with an HOA. They mainly do stuff like telling you what color you can paint your door, maximum height for hedges and whatnot, getting rid of neighbor hood pests, keeping anyone who isn't white out, sometime there are community yard sales.

I currently live in a city, but are only houses, church and a park/reservoir in the immediate area. But I've never heard of this being a thing anywhere in the UK, and lived in various closed off/residential area's as well.

That's a LOT of typing to let you know that HOAs exist to keep "undesirables" (I.E. - Anyone not white) out of neighborhoods

It wasn't anything I ever looked into but knowing the history of this country (USA) I wouldn't be remotely surprised.

I should also note that I talked about a lot of the over the top stuff they do... there are some HOAs that are super cheap and all they do is shovel the sidewalks when it snows. Those are fine. They don't really have any power given to them.

And the HOA can be strict at times but it's mostly to keep property values from falling. Your neighbors houses affect yours after all, if your neighbor paints the house pink and leaves trash all over the yard no one is going to want to buy your house and if you have to move you may have to sell the house at a big loss due to factors out of your control.

The best thing about the HOA is that it limits the number of houses that can be rental properties. Those always make home values fall (because renters trash their houses and don't mow their lawns).

Definitely no racism in our HOA; our neighborhood is really diverse.

Ours is $500 for the year.

The dues keep the swimming pool and tennis courts maintained. We also have a small clubhouse that residents can use for pool parties or events. Our HOA is self managed by the residents on a volunteer basis which keeps the dues low. Also, since no one is getting paid on the board it's pretty laid back. You probably won't ever get a notice of a violation unless it's egregious like trying to paint your house bright pink without permission.

My wife used to be the President so I got to see the budget and hear about all the neighborhood gossip.

My HOA where I was living before the divorce cost me roughly $120. I'm trying my hardest to avoid an HOA controlled community, but it's difficult. I never liked the idea of paying someone to cut my lawn ONLY IN THE SUMMERTIME (and the fee stays the same in the winter where grass isn't an issue), dump my trash, and being able to tell me what I can or can't do to MY YARD/PROPERTY outside and in my house! Also I don't swim so the pool and "clubhouse" was another pointless fee on me.

The amount of negativity HOAs bring into the world isn't worth the rare few that are overall fine.

Once I own a property, anyone whose name isn't on the deed should have exactly zero say in anything I do with or on my property.

Live in older areas? My house was built in 1960. Its a older neighborhood no HOA here. All the new developments on tiny parcels of crappier land have HOAs. I couldnt image living like that. I wanted a garden, I just put one in. I want chickens? I can put up a coup as long as a have the correct amount of land per the town.

However if I decide that i want to paint my house periwinkle, nobody besides myself should get any say in the matter.
Nobody should be able to tell me what type or color of plants for my garden, when I need to mow (within legal limits), or anything else.

HOAs are generally terrible, but a legit one is not a bad deal for a first time and/or lower income homeowner. In the last 10 months I've spent $21,000 to have a new sewer line put in and fix my roof. My last place, the HOA would have footed that bill and I definitely wasn't in a position to pay for costly repairs at that point in time.

The problem is that it's not possible to know whether an HOA is any goof until it's too late.
Sure you can ask the neighbors and look into the contract, but that isn't foolproof.
The neighbors might be the type of bootlicker that thinks the HOA was justified for fining someone for having the wrong kind if flowers.
Or maybe they've not had any interaction with then at all. Or some HOAs put a stipulation in their contract that says you aren't allowed to discuss the HOA with non members.

It simply isn't worth the risk.

Zero. Don't live in a development, either. I'm at the end of about a half mile dead end road. Surrounded by acres and acres of woods. I only have one acre, but my sister is my next door neighbor and my parents live further along in the woods. Most of my neighbors are cool and don't mind you walking on their property at all.

I actually have never lived more than a mile from home, as the place my girlfriend (now wife) and I rented was just shy of a mile from my parents house. They gave their house to my sister several years ago and built one further into their property (they have twenty acres). So it's super nice to have my family so close, and it's a very safe place for the kids to grow up. Hell, I leave my keys in my truck and almost never lock the door.

I can't imagine being in a HOA and having people tell me what I can do with my house or property.

There is one where I live but since I'm renting the house I don't really have a vote or say on what happens there. It's mostly all old retired people involved in mine though. I get newsletters on my door of what they discuss in these meetings and it's just them arguing back and fourth on what they should be using the money for the housing community there. That's not how I would want to spend my retirement or last years dealing with that.

But if you're trying to tell me that I can't have a garden where I want it, have my car parked how I want it, worry about an oil spill INSIDE MY garage that's usually closed, control what pets my spouse may have, tell me that I have to burn my electric bill and keep my street light in front of MY house on ALL NIGHT, then that's a problem. My HOA doesn't care about most of that. They don't want you parking your 20 foot boat or RV on the street, they don't want you to build a ten foot fence around your yard, but other than that, they're pretty hands off.

This! People accept the crap and that's why it keeps happening. Like I said in mine, I didn't believe in paying the SAME HOA fee all year long! Winter time should be a dip in HOA fees for the SIMPLE fact that lawn care isn't job. And it doesn't snow everyday, so the snowplow excuse doesn't cut it here.
