I know HL2 was good, but that's kinda sad if it's STILL the top...

While I don't think either game was bad, I think the popularity of Half Life 2 and Halo 2 is the reason that most FPS games made between 2005 and 2015 were absolute crap.

I don't recall Doom 2016 even having a story... and while Doom Eternal is an awesome game, not exactly a soul-turning narrative

but Borderlands 2 was my initial suggestion

also there is Deus Ex and System Shock 2 unless they are not pure-FPS enough

another one is Wolfenstein: The New Order

I wouldn't even agree that it was the pinnacle of storytelling in an FPS in 2004.

System Shock 2 is 1999 and Deus Ex is 2000 (and Thief was 1998 though maybe it's not quite an FPS)

Plenty of games. But that's mostly because I've never really liked Half-Life 2's story in the first place.

Just as a single example Halo 2 came out the same year, and I found that better in pretty much every single way in terms of actual enjoyment. And as people pointed out, Deus Ex came out even earlier.

It's part of why I've always found the Internet's constant fellating of HL2 to be little more than empty noise for an overhyped, overrated game (and why I've never shared the WOMG WHEN HL3?!?! mindset). It's not nearly as great as people act like it is. Especially if you didn't play it when it came out, and thus aren't completely blinded by your own nostalgia for it.

I only got around to playing it when The Orange Box came out and I thought it was great and really liked how the story never broke from your point of view

I havent played Deus Ex but Halo 2 didnt really have good storytelling imo even compared to other games in that series

it's not just overrated, it's actually bad

I'm not sure if most people notice, but the game has no AI and the entire world depends entirely on scripted events. enemy AI literally consists of: if out of range, path into range; when in range, stand still and shoot. that's like placeholder AI that you would write as you're developing the game before writing something more substantial later. (and this is supposed to be a pure FPS game...)

and then the utter tedium of fighting those tripod and helicopter things...

I think the only thing it had going for it at the time was a sense of realism that came from the high-res textures and atmospheric sounds and art style. it does sort of authentically feel like you're in the rural parts of an east european country.

oh and the "story telling"... just about every character in the game from the beginning to the end gushes over the main character which is the most revolting thing ever.

it's basically just a tech demo for the source engine which apparently focuses too much on scripting and not enough on actual gameplay.

I really like the original better in terms of wrote gameplay

And I somehow overlooked teh Bioshocks, they have a great combination of both linear storytelling as well as discoverable exposition.

I don't remember if Deus Ex had a linear story, other than getting captured half-way through... but it's been a long while

Dues Ex is linear with branching story paths, similar to Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines, another pretty immersive action RPG. Although, I suppose most branches end up leading to the same place, so I guess they are more temporary diversions rather than branches.

Probably had auto-run on. Lots of games from the time had that as the default because "why wouldn't you want to be running all the time in this game with first person platforming?"

That was also around the time when moving with the arrow keys and holding alt to strafe was still the default. I remember that was the default control scheme in the original version at least.

The gameplay is a bit sandboxy in places, where you can choose where to go or who to interact with in what order, but the overall story and quest chains are pretty linear. It just feels like you have more freedom than you do because most areas/missions have multiple possible solution paths you can take. But they all generally lead to the exact same place in the end.

There are a couple places where your decisions alter a few things, and you can basically pick which ending you want, but the overall story is pretty linear overall.
