My grandma told me that when he was a kid their dogs ate whatever food was leftover from dinner, and they lived long happy lives

I know it seems like one of those things old people say, but

apparently a few older civilizations used domestic dogs to eat the trash and literal shit in the town streets as a sort of sanitation service.

Why do you think the life expectancy was so low? Dogs would grab small children and carry them off. Not just wild ones but domesticated ones. Nowadays we just call them pitbulls but whatever.

Joke aside, it really was a common enough thing up into the late 1800s for death toll reports to include some variety of "taken by dogs" (usually wild ones) to show up for kids 7 and below. Though "taken" likely meant in the sense that their life was taken, not that the child themself was dragged off into the woods. That whole "don't pet strange dogs" thing we tell kids goes back over a century.

Before the mid 1800s, dogs typically lived outside and ate raw meat and/or table scraps.
