um, what? BotW didn't contain any of the mechanics that make a 'souls like'. it was just open world Zelda.

The knock offs are annoying to be honest, but it is nice that challenging and rewarding gameplay becoming a meme is a lot better than pay to win mobile games becoming a meme.

Also we got Hollow Knight out of this, so as far as I'm concerned the copycats are forgiven.

Most games that get compared to souls games aren't even similar to them. Good example was Cliffy B saying Lawbreakers was the Dark Souls of multiplayer shooters lol

I think there's a habit of calling every game that you don't run up and mash the attack button a "souls" game.

Nah, these games are needed since the AAA industry is getting so stagnant

ds has a solid design philosophy that is real appealling to alot of people, but i dont see an over saturation.

Super ironic since Dark Souls really feels like difficult Zelda to me, so ultimately souls likes are more or less just Zelda likes

Only one I can think of is Star Wars Fallen Order and it was great.

Nioh was also a nice Souls clone, specially for its fast paced action.

I WISH someone would actually rip off Dark Souls. Not a single game I've tried that was described to feel like Dark Souls, actually was. Maybe Code Vein but there was too much talking

Not really but I've never played a souls game. is the anything similar on Gamepass worth checking out?

I can understand why they're so popular and I don't necessarily think it's a bad thing because Dark Souls does have a great foundation for "challenging" games. The only thing I dislike are the Fromsoft fanboys that seem to be always against any QoL additions or dismiss any criticism to the games.

Yeah, hollow knight, fallen order, and nioh are definitely worth it.

I even hear people praising the surge 2, most of the knockoffs I can think of are actually decent.

Darksiders 3 tried, and failed, to copy souls style. Beat the game once and can't be bothered to try it again. Fallen Order was awesome.

It's just not my style of game. So even if it's an IP or setting that interests me, the gameplay just doesn't do it for me. Like Darksiders 3 took heavy inspiration from Dark Souls. I loved 1 & 2, but with 3 going in that direction, I just couldn't enjoy it.

If you hated the souls series producing knockoffs and souls like, you have no idea what Elden Ring will do to the industry. This game already sold 12 million copies in 3 weeks. Thats more than FFVII did in its lifetime, Elden Ring is now the most ever sold JRPG.

Get ready for everyone to copy it. And its for the better aswell. Open World Games have become so stagnant. Fetch this, kill x amount of enemies.

Elden Ring got rid of that crap: its now explore this area/dungeon, find a boss and kill it and claim the reward. Its like the RPGs of the oldschool flavor, the ones that we all loved like chrono trigger and final fantasy VI.

I welcome Elden Ring changing the industry, cause the new way the rpg games were handled were getting so boring. And made you repeat tasks at places just to extend playtime, rather than like Elden Ring which just has a shitload of optional dungeons. Give me optional dungeons over fetch quests any fucking day.

I love action-RPGs but vastly prefer something retro and 2D and in the vein of Zelda, Ys, Mana, etc.

Everything that's challenging is considered a Souls game from a retroactive point of view. It's ridiculous. But as far as the souls games themselves, I don't pay attention to them and it's just part and parcel of the entertainment industry to copy a popular formula. So I don't mind.

I'm 70 hours into Elden Ring, my first souls game. Yeah it's okay. Got some of the coolest boss designs in the industry and some moderately okay exploration, but beyond that, it's really not "interesting" to me either. It's just kinda mindless fight die move on.
