That happened to where I work in October and because our IT department is stubborn and develops everything in house, whilst also being way behind the time, it took 3 months for us to get full functionality back. I don't know the true cost but it was impacting our sales/installed figures by $400-800k per week during that period.

There was a solid 6 week period where I was literally being paid to do nothing

stingers, first thing i'd do is get all the infected pcs disconnected from the net. I don't know about what one hit you, but the one that hit my home pc required it to communicate with externals.

Got to defend my IT peeps here, but its likely they do stuff in house because an exec wont let them hire from outside.

Doing stuff in house, regardless of the reason, is no reason to be vulnerable to ransomware. At the very least you should have backups so you can tear down your servers with ransomware and just rebuild new ones from the backups

Happened to my company once several years ago. After sitting around doing nothing for a couple hours a coworker and I went to his house and played rocket league for the rest of the day.

Nah, our IT department is unique. Our head of IT is like one step below the owner (and we are owned by 1 guy). He is not good at his job but he's seemingly being groomed to take over the company at some point. No idea how he got into the position he's in or how there's never been repercussions for the litany of shit he's done.

I guess the easiest thing I can equate it to is rich owner hands off the keys to his unqualified son and let's him do what he wants. He isn't his son (that I know of!) but that's basically the dynamic.

The problem with the IT field in general is this

Any sort of "in house" IT has a very good chance of having some guy in a high ranking position who "knows about them computin machines" and got the job because of that while having no idea how to do his damn job.

No one knows their network support is bad until there's a problem with their network. That's why you have so many unqualified people in that field. Really unless your business outsources the IT to a company that is centered around that your network is probably working worse than it should and isn't really prepared for stuff like ransomware attacks

This is interesting! I work with a client that had a ransomeware attack around the same time that sounds eerily similar. Wonder if its the same place.

A company I supported was hit with ransomware a couple years ago. You may have a week or so of no work but you'll get busy catching up.

Enjoy the break while you can.

What do you even do when shit like this happens?

Someone got some of my passwords (I suspect in a dataleak) a few months ago and it was one of the more frantic weeks of my life trying to stop them from getting into my accounts. Can't imagine a ransomware thing, it sounds so much worse.

See loading backups sounds easy but so many in house IT don't know that they're needed or how to set then up in a way that actually helps in the case of an attack, or how to properly isolate the network and deploy backups when they're needed

Like I'm not saying IT is that hard but I'm just saying it's super easy to just coast as an IT provider and just hope nothing goes wrong
