It is very strange (I mean, it's Yoko Taro, so yeah). I like the subversive and VERY depressing nature of the narrative, but it takes a LOT to get things making sense. A lot of it is strange for the sake of strange, but again, Yoko Taro.

I guess I'll ding it a little because a lot of the fleshing out is in outside material but it's an excellent, excellent story. But then I'm a sucker for the kinds of stories that Taro writes.

One or two key plot points literally don't make sense even when you know all the supplemental material, and I think it's partially lost its edge now that more games are attempting storylines where your actions are harmful. But at the end of the day, it's still Nier.

I don't feel like I can rate this one but it really didn't do it for me, at least overall. I was super interested in the first half of the story: the characters are all great, the setting is insanely interesting, there's clear intrigue and high stakes. I've got nothing bad to say about it! Then the second half felt like it just went in a completely different direction and lost me. I got the first two endings (and watched the other two), read all the extra material that existed in the game, and still felt like there were some serious plot holes -- not to mention stuff about the world that I was really looking forward to learning more about but just seemed to be forgotten. Beyond that, I felt like the writing overall took a big hit in the second half, especially when it came to... like, everything involving Kaine.

9/10 with the one point missing for the same reasons as others have called out - supplemental material adds a truly absurd amount of crucial context, even if you can understand the actual themes and basic plot beats well enough without it.

Unfortunately I've only played Nier Automata, but I'd love to play this some day for sure.

It does some interesting stuff, but I'm including the multiple playthrough aspect itself as a part of the story here. Automata is better in every way

9 if only because both The Aerie and Facade make me want to not care about their ultimate fate.

Gideon and Jakob section though, in a very good but painful to watch way.

Unfortunately I've only played Nier Automata, but I'd love to play this some day for sure.

I can't speak to the PS4 version, but the PS3 Nier blew me away back in 2011.

8.5/10. There are pacing issues but its highs are quite remarkable.
