Got like $80 of amazon credit and never used my Kindle yet. Give me some suggestions for books.

I like horror, mystery, thriller, sci-fi, fantasy, historical, non fiction on interesting things.

Basically I am open to almost anything.

Just recommend me some good books and why the book you recommend.

I just keep looping in circles when I look at them. I usually like most books but will admit that a couple of the books I read lately I didn't like.

I think one was seeds of war and another was the black farm or something.

Usually we are good though. Recommend away.

Bradbury - Illustrated Man, Something Wicked, Fahrenheit 451, The Martian Chronicles
Gibson - Neuromancer and that series
Stephen King and fuck anyone who judges me for it - The Shining and Misery
Raymond Chandler - I've read Farewell My Lovely and The Lady in the Lake
Ralph Ellison - Invisible Man - A novel to emerge undaunted from my HS English classes as a favorite
Pynchon - The Crying of Lot 49 - Everyone files Pynchon under postmodern and intricate but I also found this one very funny.

I have two horror/thriller novels out.

One is a thriller about a haunted gun. If you pick up the gun, you can't drop it until you kill six people with it. I pitch the book as Dexter meets Deathwish.

The other is small-town horror. It's about people who trade away their sick/injured body parts to an organ-swapping demon. If you leave town with your traded parts, they vanish from your body. The townspeople are thus stuck there until one day the demon offers them a chance to escape--but of course, there's a catch... I pitch the book as Salem's Lot meets Hellraiser.

Message me if either sounds up your alley (If I name the books, I might get modded for self-promo).

As for other recommendations...

Dark Matter by Blake Crouch - Tight sci-fi thriller about the multiverse. Guy gets taken from his world and has to find his way back to his family while uncovering the mystery of why he was taken.

First Law Trilogy by Joe Abercrombie - I don't reach much fantasy, but this grimdark trilogy portrays flawed, broken characters that are not your typical tropey heroes: a crippled inquisitioner, a washed-up warrior, a spoiled-brat prince, etc. Abercrombie's writing style is ridiculously readable IMO.

The Fourth Monkey by JD Barker - Gripping, suspenseful thriller. A serial killer kidnaps a girl, but the detectives can't capture or interrogate him because dies in the opening chapter. The detectives have to examine his diary and piece together clues that lead to the kidnapped girl's location.

NightWhere by John Everson - Supernatural horror story about a sex club on the boundary between earth and hell. I thought this one would be sleazy/cheesy, but it's remarkably creepy, well-written, and heartbreaking.

Gibson - Neuromancer and that series

This reminds me... Check out Altered Carbon by Richard K. Morgan. I never bothered to watch the Netflix adaptation because my memories of the book were so good. Dark, gritty, mind-bending stuff.

Stephen King and fuck anyone who judges me for it - The Shining and Misery

Misery is great. Salem's Lot and Pet Sematary are also great if you want something scary/thrilling. 11/22/63 is a time-travel masterpiece with tons of heart and suspense.

Pynchon - The Crying of Lot 49 - Everyone files Pynchon under postmodern and intricate but I also found this one very funny.

I read this one in college. Much more accessible than Gravity's Rainbow if you want to try Pynchon.

Another cool/weird book I read in college... Remainder by Tom McCarthy. It's about a guy who wins a ton of money and uses it to perfectly recreate a specific moment in his past. He buys an apartment building, hires actors to act as his neighbors, etc.

Desperation was my favorite Stephen King book. And the 2nd of your two books sounded interesting Plasma.

After watching season 2 of Hill House, I think I am good on Lady in the Lake. I didn't like that season.

So right now I think 11/23/63, Misery, and Dark Matter sound decent. I might have Dark Matter on hardback actually. I'll have to look.

I couldn't get into Altered Carbon on Netflix for some reason.

That is a sorta- Turn of the Screw adaptation? Totally unrelated other than the allusion to Arthurian legend in the name. The Lady here is a non-supernatural victim's corpse.

I never touched that one because I hated its sister-book The Regulators. Need to give Desperation a chance on of these days

Regulators is worse for sure. It's almost like a fan fic version of it. Not saying you will like desperation, but I did.

I also do have dark matter in hard back.

Sparrow Hill Road by Seanan McGuire.

It's the urban legend of the phantom hitchhiker, except here the ghost is the protagonist. Her name is Rose Marshall, she was run off the road in 1952, and she's been hitching her way across America ever since, seeking out the soon-to-be victims of traffic accidents, saving the ones she can, and providing a friendly face for those she can't.

(TBH, I love everything by Seanan McGuire, and her 'evil alter ego' Mira Grant. The October Daye, InCryptid, Newsflesh and Parasitology series are all fantastic).

Quick look at my bookshelf -

The Understudy by David Nicholls - A struggling actor is cast as the understudy for a Hollywood superstar's stage debut, and falls in love with the superstar's wife.

Look Who's Back by Timur Vermes - Hitler somehow finds himself in modern day Germany, where he wastes no time picking up where he left off. This time however, he becomes a viral sensation when people assume he's an actor who never breaks character.

Pandemonium by Christopher Brookmyre - A school trip goes disastrously wrong when the legions of Hell escape from the nearby top-secret research facility.

One Good Deed by David Baldacci - In 1940s America, a recently released ex-con investigates the murder of a local businessman.

Years ago I was at a flea market and had the choice between Koontz's Watchers and his other book Strangers. I went with Strangers and thought it was a total slog.

Need to give Watchers a shot one of these days.

Glokta's POV is hilarious. I also find Jezal's parts funny as well. Abercrombie's books have a great wry humor to them.

Recommendation I should've mentioned the other day:

Sphere by Michael Crichton. A group of scientists investigate a mysterious spaceship that's discovered on the ocean floor. I won't spoil other than saying that it gets weird, creepy, and fun.

I guess I expected things to be more dreary because I had always heard it described as grimdark. But the wry humor is not to be undersold. Glokta was my favorite POV character with Logan and Jezal following.

I'm looking forward to his next book. He's taking a break from the First Law world and working on something tentatively called The Devils. Details are sparse but I've heard him pitch it as : "Who does the Pope send when Italy is overrun by demons? Worse demons." And there's this.

I just finshed The Heroes last months, so I've got some catching up to do with his First Law books.

But damn, The Devils sounds hype

I'd recommend The Old Man and the Sea, if you haven't read it. It's fairly short, so would be a quick read.

It's a supernatural thriller I suppose. About an entity that dwells in a pool of water and the events that unfurl in regards to it and the townsfolk.
