Nominate Diablo II

6.5, a pretty steep decline from Season 1. While it was a good idea to put Clementine through a darker story to test her innocence, and we got some very good character moments, it just ended up being too bleak and miserable. Really not a fan of how the coded autistic character was treated either.

Loved it. Doesn't hit the same highs as Season 1, but still strong overall. Clementine's POV gave it a fresh new perspective, Kenny's return was a pleasant surprise, and while some gamers didn't like the S2 cast, I enjoyed the crew, particularly Luke and Jane.

I find season 2 to be weaker than even New Frontier and Final Season. This is also when Telltale started streamlining their game so much that there is barely any gameplay in their games. Judging the game by the story itself also, it feels like a filler epilogue rather than a sequel.

A decently strong start turns into bland zombie survival fodder; unlike the built-in benefit of the first season seeming fresh and bursting with potential, Season Two holds little twist or mystery to its proceedings. The illusion of choice is more visible than ever as Clementine holds little influence over the plot's direction, and unlike the (deliberate or not) thematic bleakness of the first game's choices not mattering, Season Two's forgettable cast of talking heads and choice death fodder ends up being a "been there, done that" affair. The return of Kenny adds some stakes and tension to the proceedings however, and I will admit the final confrontation stands out as a highlight playing on the player's familiarity with Kenny versus the new, uncertain character of Jane. I'm not going to say this story is a bad one, but it's a played out one, especially being almost 10 years removed from this game's initial release and seeing many adventure games and zombie media just do it better.

Enjoyed it at the time, and I think it gets a little more flak than it really deserves, but it does start to expose why Telltale's game model wasn't very good.

I feel like I've been giving a lot of low scores recently >_> This was so disappointing though. I like the initial setup with the new cast, but as the game goes on it shifts focus away from them in favour of empty fanservice with Kenny (who I really dislike) and bizarrely boring plot choices. The casual way they toss aside Luke in the final episode sums up how little care the writers had for the new cast, and the whole thing felt incredibly disjointed episode to episode. Clementine herself felt disconnected from the story for some reason.

This was the game that showed me how limited Telltale's tropes are when it comes to telling a good story, at least the first season had the novelty going for it. The string of empty deaths felt less 'bleak' and more 'annoying' this time around, and the lack of influence from the player was more obvious than ever.

Up.

4.5/10. A huge disappointment. Good in the first half but collapses in the second. Also fairly gross treatment of the implied autistic character as said.
