Somehow it got millions on crowdfunding websites, then it just bloated into hundreds of millions, while the game itself haven't been finished for almost 10 years now. How they get money is the promise of "concept" of a ship aka jusy concept so the models dont even exist in game yet (though last i heard, some backers do get their ship in the beta) The game itself probably will never get finished, while the beta exists since 2 or 3 years ago each year barely any update and very incremental ones if there is. Might change nowadayz, but who knows.
