what's the term for games that are recieving lots of bullshit new paid content continuously, drip fed to players to make them keep spending? live games or something like that? essentially they want to transition to a GTA5 model, where they put in minimum effort for maximum profit on a game that can last for years.

because game publishers are beholden not to the people playing the games but the investors who throw money at them. investors dont give a fuck about game quality, they care about profit from games, and nothing on the market right now is more profitable then something like GTAV or even skyrim.

Making fun games that can be enjoyed for longer periods of a time aren't mutually exclusive concepts. There are very few that don't descend into grinding to purchase items, though. Square Enix is notoriously bad at this, so I don't expect Babylon's Fall to be anything but that.

To be fair, I can't exactly blame Platinum games for at least giving this a shot. A studio with hundreds of employees probably doesn't love riding off of the residuals of a couple of past games knowing that every game they release has to be a smash hit or risk dragging the entire company under. The idea of having a title that brings in a steady stream of revenue and is relatively low effort to maintain is the kind of foundation that every studio would dream of because it gives them enough financial security to make the types of games they really want to make rather than chasing trends.

The problem is the deal with the devil that you have to make with a publisher to get that kind of game in the first place.

Platinum is such a mediocre studio that I can't find myself caring that much. They have some great games, but they also have a lot of turds. Maybe they have some new ideas that would benefit from this model.

Nah, they're almost a pure development studio. Their games are (almost) always published by a third party (Sega, Konami, Activision, etc):

I see no issue here. With this method they can reduce cost, time and maximize profits. People don't have a issue when MMOs do it, so why other genres?
