Yeah, there's a host of issues with how the original XBX released that impacts sales, so matching that isn't exactly saying much. Despite being on a worse selling system, XCX was much more widely available than XC1 was. I think there's a definite reason they want to keep the series going in the path of XC1/2, those kinds of decisions are always based on reception.

Worth noting that X did get slightly better reviews than 2, though it's close.

I'm gonna predict the Switch can beat the PS2. If the next LoZ meets the hype without a new system syphoning sales from the Switch, if price drops land at competitive times, if the Switch keeps landing solid releases...

...I dunno, I just don't see Nintendo needing to release a new system in the next two years. If they can go three years and keep some momentum, it'll be close...and if it's close, I don't think Nintendo allows that landmark to be missed.

I doubt they care about landmarks. The DS was less than a million behind the PS2.

Also worth noting that the chip shortage is holding them back, and likely will continue to do so until next year.

Yeah, if Switch reaches 150m only for all production to immediately cease with the launch of a new system... it would be the most Nintendo thing ever.

And one thing we haven't mentioned yet - Animal Crossing is now the best selling single-platform (and non-bundled) game of all time. Mario Kart Wii had held that record for years.

Fair point. I was going off of memory that Nintendo took some atep that was likely just to help the Wii cross 100,000,000, but also my memory is hazy.

I still don't have a Switch.

I think Tokyo Mirage Sessions got a port because they figured it may ride the wave of interest from FE in general. XCX is a tougher sell since that game sold horribly and had much more negative reaction than XC1 and 2.

The thing that makes me sad is the Game Cube being a big nothing burger in sales. That system might have had the best exclusive line-up of all time.

Gamecube made up for it with excellent software sales. I believe still Nintendos best attach rate.

Absolutely, but X was also constrained by a lack of supply. I definitely remember shops where I am selling out of X due to lower shipments than demand from Nintendo. I dont know how X did relative to Nintendos expectations but 1 absolutely blew past them. Nintendo really didnt know what they had with Xenoblade until 2 came out and sure enough when the series got given a chance it blew up.

Anyway, I think the main thing holding the Switch back from taking the all time sales crown is the chip shortage. I feel without that it would absolutely do it but Nintendo got hit by it like everyone else. Regardless it will pass the PS4 and Game Boy this year, and will definitely get close to the DS and PS2 overall.

The Wii U might wind up being the most "erased" console ever. Switch is one or two re-releases away from evaporating the last trace of uniqueness that system has.
