I mean maybe someone older and unhip or whatever who greets a black guy with, "What's up, man?" then greets a white guy with "How's it going?" or something similar.

My manager does it constantly. His lingo changes like the person can't understand him if he talks in his normal vernacular. I hear it everywhere really and often wonder if the black dude thinks it's a weird thing to do

I don't like being called "bro" or "brother" by someone who doesn't say it to people who aren't black, though.

If its a noticeable change in how they interact with people (which happens more often than one might think) yeah it is kinda cringey. Like yeah, I get that youre trying to be friendly and approachable but you can do that without attempting a half-assed code switch.

I never thought of "man" having a racial component to it, it always struck me as more of a late 60's to early 70's counterculture word.

Why not "bro?" We white dudes call pretty much everybody bro. It's almost as widespread as dude

yea, there are definitely white guys who call everyone "bro", and if it's from them, that's fine with me.

but I've also noticed people (not just white guys) who would refer to a black guy as "bro", but other people in a group as something else.

tbf, it might be unconscious, but I don't like it.

Funny, I use "Man", "Bro", and "G" for almost everyone except for old white dudes. And that's because they are to rigid for me to be comfortable using my own natural vernacular.

What about that kind of situation?

Edit: I should note that I am white, and the "G" thing is for "Guy" in my mind, which I also use a lot.

You're not entirely incorrect. Those types tend to take it to the extreme to where even though they probably do really talk like that, it still sounds forced and cringe.
