https://www.cnbc.com/2022/02/02/black-americans-lack-of-participation-in-the-stock-market-likely-to-widen-post-pandemic-wealth-gap.html

Thanks to the historic stock market rebound from pandemic lows, affluent 401(k)-holders and savvy investors in the U.S. enjoyed double-digit returns from stocks over the past two years. But not for the majority of Black Americans. Only 34% of Black American households owned equity investments, compared to 61% of white families, according to Federal Reserve Boards most recent survey in 2019. The average value of stocks Black Americans owned only amounted to $14,400, nearly a quarter of what their white peers held, the data said. Because Black households are less likely to be invested in the stock market and on every level less likely to be engaged in the financial system, they not only entered the pandemic with large gaps, the likelihood is that we are going to see some of these gaps widen coming out of the pandemic, said John Lettieri, the Economic Innovation Groups president and CEO. The primary way that Americans build wealth and invest is through retirement plans, and there have been enormous disparities between Black and white Americans on that front. Many Black Americans missed out on the hefty gains from the stock market because they often hold occupations where employers are unlikely to offer an employer-sponsored retirement plan.

Only 44% of Black Americans have retirement savings accounts, with a typical balance of around $20,000, compared to 65% of white Americans, who have an average balance of $50,000, according to the Federal Reserve. If you had access to a well managed retirement plan, whats happened in the last two years has been a boon to your bottom-line wealth, Lettieri said. The stock market pulled off a stunning recovery rally from the pandemic lows in March 2020, with the S&P 500 enjoying the fastest bull market since World War II, doubling off the bottom. Many credited unprecedented monetary and fiscal stimulus for the markets leap out of its massive pandemic slump. The latest jobs report showed that for all Black workers, the unemployment rate in December stood at 7.1% more than twice that of white workers at 3.2%. The roughly two-to-one ratio for Black versus white unemployment has been consistent throughout history.

Is it something they're choosing not to participate in, or something they disproportionately lack the resources to participate in? This headline reminds me of all those articles about millennials not buying homes, like it's an aesthetic choice.

Users on this board legit think we're better off as hunter-gatherers or peasants. They'll be completely onboard with this. It's not about bringing the poor up, it's about making sure others don't have more.

Way to misrepresent an argument from a topic you never returned to.

Also this.

Kinda hard to participate in the stock market when you live paycheck to paycheck.

They dont teach financial education in schools. Most some might get it taught to save your way out of poverty. Which is kinda dumb with inflation and how much you get in savings account.

Also doesnt help the gap that a lot of white people probably have their stocks passed on to their children.

Yeah, it would have definitely helped if I had some sort of financial education in school. I graduated high school not knowing a damn thing about finances. I finally started investing in 2015, even though I was doing it poorly. I pulled my money out of the stock market entirely because I had no idea what I was doing and I didn't have the patience for it. I decided to jump back into the stock market a couple years later and did much better.

Also it's easier than ever to invest in the stock market with apps like robinhood, webull, fidelity, etc.

One issue though is that there's still a good amount of people who don't even have a bank account. It's been rough to those that solely rely on cash since the pandemic put a squeeze on money and coin transactions.

I can't find anything about total value in holdings / total value invested. But 1:4 black Americans is investing in crypto compared to about 1:9 white Americans.

I also wouldn't be surprised if black people have invested more in total than white into crypto but if whites have more total wealth in crypto (earlier adopters in large volumes).

I make sure every job I apply for has a 401k, and invest into it proper, and poor what little into stocks and my Roth when I can.

There's really not enough information about that poll to understand what's going on here. But the estimates really don't pass the smell test so I'm going to bet there's a sampling issue here.

FWIW, this survey from last summer has investment rates roughly even among racial groups, which is still surprising to me
https://www.econotimes.com/Twice-as-many-men-as-women-invest-in-cryptocurrency-1616103
People of all races are equally investing in cryptocurrency, with 14 percent of Asians, 11 percent of whites, 11 percent of Blacks, 10 percent of Hispanics, and 13 percent of other races.
Even though people of color invested in cryptocurrencies at higher rates than other investment realms, whites dominate the crypto market.
Sixty-two percent of cryptocurrency investors are white, 67 percent are men, and 66 percent are under 45 years old.

The one thing that might be at play here is that in the US Black people are on average younger than white people.

Also, holy shit. How stupid some people are when they try to understand the idea of communism.

"Grrr, I'm so mad at this thing I completely vilified in my head without even taking pause to realize my assumptions make literally no sense at all. I just am too jaded to understand people aren't all just dedicating their lives to trying to destroy people they're jealous of. "

So yeah, first of all their is a definite lack of financial education about investing in schools. Black people just don't trust the stock market. I just started investing in the stock market at the beginning of October 2021. Like I'm trying to understand why my parents and my wife's parents and their friends never invested, and it's the same story about "it's too risky and I might possibly lose money." Like I try to explain they could dump the money into one stock that mimics the entire market and you would have made much more money the last 20 years compared to your 0.5% interest savings account, and that their retirement account money is actually in stocks, and they just look at me crazy and repeat "what if I lose money?"
