It's a great game with great characters. My first Fire Emblem and where my username comes from. Still the GOAT tbh

I like it for reviving Fire Emblem.

That said, it was very forgettable. Better than Fates, though, at least.

Ten years later and I still can't tell how they managed to make a game so obviously full of love and yet gave it such terrible chapter maps. If you make a strategy game series and you think this is your swan song, shouldn't that be the thing you focus on most?

It was a great game for newcomers and for saving the Fire Emblem franchise, but the core gameplay is (IMO) just average when compared to the rest of the franchise. It's definitely not a bad game, but it's not amazing either.

I like Awakening, but at the same time I'm kind of annoyed that some of its gameplay choices have become mainstay in the franchise.

I really want Switch ports of the GBA FEs, but I'd also buy an Awakening port in a hearthbeat.

Trash maps and unbalanced gameplay but reclassing and the pairing mechanics gives it so much replayability. I've definitely done more runs of Awakening than any others. Future Past and the Challenge Map DLCs also make up a lot for the main game's shit maps.

People hate on it now cuz its popular and started the whole casualization of the series thing. But its incredibly fun and replayable. Fates really improved on the gameplay but if I had to replay one, Id pick Awakening

It has its problems, but I definitely enjoyed it for what it was (especially considering that it very well could had been the final FE game if it had underperformed).

Awakening needs a switch port.

It's easily my least favorite game in the series, honestly. It was so focused on jamming in borderline nonsensical fanservice that it neglected to make good maps, its game mechanics were flat-out busted (especially pairup & Nos tanking), a lot of its characters were just super flat anime tropes (literally how does a game get away with making two individual characters whose entire personality is "I'm boring and people often forget me"? Jeez.), and the game actively sabotages its own best plot elements for the sake of adding pointless bonuses. "Hey, remember that memorable scene where Emmeryn fell 100~ feet headfirst and died in a meaningful sacrifice? Well why don't you play this map so you can find out that she ACTUALLY just had amnesia and nobody realized that she was alive the whole time? How fun!"

I dunno. I appreciate that it actually got marketing for once and thus sold, but the quality of the game was, uh, not amazing. I'm a big FE fan, but I feel like Awakening has the least to offer of...well, anything in the series. Even Fates, which followed a lot of Awakening's mistakes in the writing department, at least had better maps & mechanics.

lol the spotpass maps were complete nonsense. It's better to pretend they're not canon. I think the Walhart arc was the best part of Awakening.

My dream FE game is a modern 2-part remaster of the Elibe games where you play through Eliwood's/Hector's story and what you do in that game (side chapters visited, characters alive, A-rank supports unlocked, etc.) can actually affect the playthrough of Roy's story afterwards in different ways. It would be like what Genealogy of the Holy War did with its two generations of characters, but both halves of the story would be their own game entirely and you could do a playthrough of the second half without playing the first if you really wanted to. Plus it could also have modern-day features, like skills, reclassing, thieves using daggers (along with the extended weapon triangle seen in Fates), certain legendary weapons being unbreakable, etc.

Give me this and I would never say a bad thing about Nintendo ever again.

I just want ports. I hate game remakes.

we got three houses and fates out of it, shadows was good as well. it was a worthy franchise to save

I loved Awakening. It was my first Fire Emblem game. Then I played Fates when it came out and I thought Fates was terrible. I havent played a FE game since then but I plan to get Three Houses soon

Making the Manakete Morgan that could double Apotheosis Anna was so fun.

I remember it having an awful story and characters.

It was the game that got me into the series. Really enjoyed it when it came out. I can't believe it's almost 10 years old. Damn.

It was a fun enough game from a build a team of customizable demi-gods to kill everything but it is a pretty horrid game from a Fire Emblem perspective. Only route objectives, bland repetitive maps, busted class change, etc.

The porn was good.

Especially the PINPOINT doujins.

Robin x Nah incest was a weird choice, but sure, it's fine.

Awakening is good, and most of the characters are interesting enough once you get far enough into their support chains to get past their gimmicks. The first two arcs are good and great, but Validar, Aversa, and Grima are just such a flat, flavorless villains that they drag down the 3rd act hard.

But I must give it props for the scene where you meet with Tiki as she wakes up. She sees Lucina and mutters, "Mar-mar?" - which was the childish nickname she gave Marth, who has been dead for about a millennia at this point. She then brushes it off, but it's a great little piece of writing that illustrates the tragedy of living as long as a manakete does. It's also a nice touch that Walhart specifically charges out as soon as you step into range, unlike most bosses, as it dovetails nicely with his characterization. And it's a nice subversion that he knows all about Excellus' scheming with Aversa and forces him into the vanguard with naked intimidation. They do a legit great job of establishing Walhart as a terrifying smart bad ass monster.

It's definitely way less of a mess than Fates. Not that Fates is all bad, mind, but Revelation makes even the dumbest, most contrived aspects of Awakening seem brilliant by comparison. Neither Birthright nor Conquest are winners in the writing department either.

I beat my first Fire Emblem (The Blazing Blade) a week or so ago and I'm playing through The Sacred Stones now. Gonna play as many of them as I can.

I love it a lot. The army building aspect is so fun. I love being able to grind so that everyone can be a beast by the end. I wish there were more objectives than route/kill boss though.

That being said, I love your username. Blue Hair Inigo is canon (assuming the blue hair comes from Chrom).

Idgaf what anyone says, the supports between Olivia x Chrom, Chrom x Inigo, Inigo x Lucina, and Lucina x Oliva are just far better than anything Sumia has. I will defend this ship until the day I die.

Also Owain is one of my all time favorite units.

TBH, most FE stories are bad, or at best a serviceable medieval type fantasy lore setting for its bitchin' gameplay.

At least the ones released in English.

Path of Radiance had a good story. Radiant Dawn was okay

Yeah, Path of Radiance is good and Three Houses stumbles a bit on execution, but is also pretty good. Haven't played Radiant Dawn, but other than that I struggle with calling any of them good stories. Rekka no ken is kind of drivel if you dig into it, but why would you? It's literally the best game ever, discounting the better games.

"Most FE stories are bad" undersells just how radically awful Fates's story is. It's Razzie-level.

I always enjoyed Rekka No Ken's storyline, along with being a very solid entry.
