SPICE. Is this spice? I don't even know. It is the first big elimination, for sure and the first main character from one of the films to bite it. I wasn't expecting Captain Marvel to do that well though, so I don't know how spicy this elimination is. I feel like most people either aren't huge fans or like her but have like 20+ characters they prefer over her. I definitely wasn't expecting her to go out in 98th though so I suppose there is some spice here.

Captain Marvel is survived by her cat and that's about it. I guess you can count Nick Fury as a Captain Marvel character, but he's everywhere so that's a bit of a stretch. I didn't think Captain Marvel was bad, but I think it is my least favorite of the Phase 3 movies so I can't say I'm that sad to see her go.

There are, however, plenty of similarities between Captain Marvel and Supergirl. Or should I say, between Carol Danvers and Kara Danvers.

I could see the comparison. All of the powers plus no interesting personality flaws is a common complaint between both of them.

I wasn't expecting any protagonists to bite the dust in the first ten, but Carol isn't very popular on account of being generic. I've even seen some people call her a Mary Sue but I wouldn't quite go THAT far. I mean, she had amnesia and was being used by villains for an extensive part of her life. That interesting backstory is the best part of her character (and nothing else comes close).

I liked her in her solo film actually but the issue with her in everything else is she's treated like a "break the glass in case off emergency" panic button and doesn't really get involved with the team

She was good in the Party Thor episode of What If.

Danvers is boring in the comics and boring in the movies... And I actually like Brie Larson as an actress!

I disagree with that slightly because I actually think both comic Superman and comic Captain Marvel are significantly better characters than any of the film interpretations (depending on author and storyline, of course). I feel like it isn't all that uncommon for people to not like either film Superman or MCU Marvel for some of the reasons listed above. I mean both have their defenders, particularly certain iterations of film Superman, but "they have all the powers and are just kind of boring" is a complaint I have heard about both of them, multiple times.

I do agree that What If? Captain Marvel is significantly more fun in her 5 minutes of screen time than Brie Larson Captain Marvel is in any of her films, which is sort of an issue because she really isn't supposed to be that different of a different character.

What if season 2 may expand on that hopefully.

One of the problems with Superman, Captain Marvel, and other such supertypes is that they're not great movie characters. Movies demand a big bombastic supervillain to threaten the world and we expect it to be saved at the end, and these types offer little suspense that they'll make it through.

However, in serials, I think they're much better off because they don't always need the big booming villain event every time. More time can be spread for how they exist in the world. Investing in what they protect, why they do, and how they go about doing it > bad guy wants to destroy earth in the next three hours.

Look at Hancock with Will Smith. The first half of the movie is pretty great! It looks at a Superman type who is beaten down by the grind and past losses and is just dealing. Poorly, but dealing. The second half is a cliche superhero borefest.

Captain Marvel is... alright. I think she had a better movie than Marvel's other cinematic god, Thor, and better excuses for being away from big fights. Her interactions with Fury were some excellent buddy cop movie stuff. Her presence has taken away some of the shine from past events, but I'd argue the Eternals existence is even more egregious.

I haven't read many comics with her in them. My experience with her is a confusing mess of identities (Ms. Marvel, depowered by Rogue, Binary, Rogue personality, then fast forward to lightning suit then Civil War II... yeah, I don't follow her well).
