It was made by a depressed man who was probably off his wazoo on drugs and alcohol. I've always found it funny how it somehow gets this "masterful plot* tier placement when in reality it real is just a whiney kid who is surrounded by hot girls trying to fight in a giant Mecha.

The power fantasy of "getting the girl" and being in awesome mecha is very common in anime. The reality of that life... the constant fear of death, literally having the fate of the world on your shoulders combined with the awkward teenage phase? Of course you're gonna be fucked up.

The ending is just so...bad it's hard to recommend.

The ending is legendary. Not sure where the fans get off complaining lol

I love telling people that it is the best worst anime ever.

Starts off generic, gets amazing, has some weirdly normal filler, gets crazy, falls completely off rails, destroys the park, the fire spreads into the town, and the smoke causes acid rain for the next 100 years.

I was obsessed with it as a horny teen but probably wouldn't like it as much now

Best Anime

They keep the ball rolling unlike most of Gundam, which has a tendency to stall. There's a lot to think about on a personal level, and also a lot to get into for the discussion online or with friends or whatever. It's kind of perfect. Whether you're into fan art, or figures, or picking out references, or just looking for something good to sit down and watch.

The whole series is just:
"Shinji. Get in the fucking robot!"
" No! Fuck you! Robots are dumb!"
*shinji proceeds to sob sobbingly as gorgeous girls surround him*

The "Soukyuu no Fafner" franchise is better than the NGE franchise IMO.

It's fun once. There are some cool parts.

The plot is awful, though, as is Shinji. There's good unintentional humor and it does subvert a few tropes successfully.

I still feel like it's great. Some of the movies were better and some were worse at parts. But I think it's more about the whole self reflection and learning to deal with other people thats the important stuff

The story itself is fairly simple enough and straightforward one you get a grasp on it.

It's honestly one of the worst anime ever made.

Mainstream, as in not blatantly hentai.

I don't think it's supposed to make sense, I think it's just supposed to artistically capture the awkward, scary feeling of adolescence. Like, the plot is not the selling point of the show, it's just a vehicle to make you feel things, remember how shitty it was to be that age.

I didn't exactly have that, but I remember piloting an Evangelion. Too bad it was controlled by an angel and I lost my damn leg!

Why do people call Evas robots when it's made abundantly clear within the first episode they are humanoids that synchronize and share pain with the pilots.

I hate mecha shows and unfortunately, this one didn't do much for me. I mean, since I hate the genre really, it DID make it more..... palettable to me, but even with that it was just confusing and all around meh. The music was alright though. (Honestly, I feel like mech shows in general have amazing music. Even this one is just okay in that regard)

The only mech show I was able to enjoy was Full Metal Panic, and that's only because I watched Fumoffu first and fell in love with Sousuke's character. If I never was exposed to him that way, I'd never have watched and liked FMP.
