It's depressing how a good game can be a good game and also be free and people will still complain because there isn't some sort of Skinner box dopamine drip system to trick you into thinking you're having fun grinding some menial tasks.

Why does it matter that you're already at onyx? Is the game fun? Are you enjoying yourself? Isn't that enough?

um what kind of post is this lol? You apparently dont know anything. The game is microtransaction hell hole. With a slow progression battle pass that everyone is complaining about. Glitchy game with pc players cheating. Minimal maps and game types with forced game modes

stfu

But is it fun? Turn a blind eye to the cash shop and progression rates and try to play it like you would Halo 1: a game that you played because it was fun not because it gave you a steady stream of unlocks.

This sort of thinking is so weird to me. Likeyes, the game is fun. Yes Im playing it because its fun.

But the MCC had literally laid the groundwork for whats probably the best customization in a modern shooter - in terms of both character model, unlocks, and playlist selection. Now that Infinite has come out, it has literally borrowed none of what worked from the previous title.

Am I just supposed to be like oh well, its free! and let them fuck over multiple other aspects of the game that made it fun, simply because the main facet of the games enjoyment still exists?

Thats soweird, I guess. Like why settle for so much less when the previous game had so much more?

It is pretty weird how fine we were with playing older Halo just because it was fun, and now if the extra mechanics on top (the battle pass) are slow it's somehow bad - as if it's not just extra on what we've already decided was fun.

Standards change, I guess.

Edit: I have no experience with MCC (just up to Halo Reach OG), if MCC is the thing being compared to I can understand being upset at apparent regression here.

Because, as you said, it's free. You're paying $0 for one of the better Halo multiplayer experiences on the market and the big sticking point is the fact that you can't pick as many helmets as you used to be able to? It's Halo. They could literally make every single character the default Master Chief model and it wouldn't impact the game in the slightest.

If the game is lacking meaningful features like additional playlists or forge, things I know they said were coming later, those are valid complaints. The fact that you don't have as many cosmetic options really shouldn't be.

@s0nicfan , I still entirely disagree with that though. The games progression does not become immune to criticism because the product is free. In fact, they wouldnt have made the product free to begin with unless data showed that they would make a greater profit off of it. Theyre not doing this to be nice - they NEED some form of player engagement in the micro transactions in order for the game to continue to function.

So, I look at it like this.

  1. The developers want my engagement with the store, yet have utilized it to take away a core aspect of previous titles, and attempt to sell it back to me.
  2. The store and BP itself is egregiously overpriced, and is designed in such a way that it exists only to prey on those who have trouble resisting. It is predatory by design.
  3. The game should be making arguments for why I should come from the MCC over to Infinite, while the new game has stripped away core aspects of the series to turn a profit.
How are these not valid criticisms? I did not ask for this game to be free - Id actually prefer the opposite. A full priced game which offers healthy player choice in all aspects would be far more preferable. The game was made free in order to justify these changes and turn a higher profit - that doesnt dismiss criticism, it actively deserves it.

the greatest swindle game developers ever managed to pull off was convincing customers that they arent entitled to any sort of cosmetics or extras in their game & that these are luxuries it's ok to pay more for

It's a good game if it's a beta. It's disappointing if it's a finished product.

Needs more maps, spawns need some work on certain maps, being able to queue for what you actually want to play, etc.

Core gameplay is fun though.

It being free doesn't really help the people that were already going to pay 60 dollars to play the campaign too. Customization has been a pretty major part of the franchise since Halo 3. Personally, it's never been something that I've put a lot of thought into, but I appreciate that it's there. There is absolutely no defending their current system, regardless of whether it's free or not.

Also, Infinite has numerous other issues not even related to the progression. Not enough maps, lack of player collision, no way to select what gametype you want to play. And that's only a few of the issues. I'm sick of 343 releasing unfinished products, and as good as the gameplay itself is so far, Infinite's release is just as much of a mess as their other games were.

I do think it will improve over time just like Halo 5 and the MCC did. But right now they deserve every bit of criticism thrown their way.

the "dopamine drip" shit is the worst argument i always see for games not having daily challenges, customization, etc. just because a game's core gameplay is fun doesn't mean the gameplay loop of doing the same shit over and over with nothing to show for it for months will be fun

Those are valid criticisms, but IMO tangential to the TC's original complaints about running out of progression. The first 2 are criticisms of the store, not the game. "The cosmetics are too expensive" doesn't make the game less fun. The problem is people are so trained to expect progression that if you ask someone "Hey, how fun is the game?" they respond with "the store is too expensive". As for item 3, the thing that should draw you from the MCC is the gameplay, not how many hats it has. It sounds like your biggest concern is that the MCC has better customization. Which, okay, it might. And the store might charge too much for that extra special rounded blue helmet you liked in MCC, but why does it matter? Just don't buy any of that shit and play the game if it's more fun than the MCC. If it isn't, stick to the MCC.

That's why I made the skinner box comparison. If your key complaint about a multiplayer FPS is that you rank up too quickly or you don't have as many stickers to play with compared to a prior game then what you're looking for in the game is a more well designed dopamine drip feed, not good gameplay. If you disagree, ask yourself whether you'd prefer all cosmetics be unlocked from the start or whether you'd have the game drip-feed them to you over time.

I hate the entire concept of progression. A multiplayer game should be fun because it's fun to play. If you are going to make it a Skinner box, do it like Destiny where you can actually get weapons and whatnot.

You said it yourself, it's free. MCC was $60. You are complaining about a free game having microtransactions and guess what... that's how all free to play games are.

At the end of the day the battle pass goes to May and its ALL COSMETIC. Pony up the $10 for the Pass or don't.
