I felt that way when I played Dragon Quest VIII and beat the big bad guy and then found out that I'm 40 hours in and still only halfway through the game.

It took me ~160 hours to get the platinum trophy, although I could've gotten it a few hours sooner because I was doing some accolades that weren't tied to a trophy. But yeah it's a long game

The game is, indeed, unnecessarily long. Like they could have lopped off the last third of it and given us a bittersweet ending in which we've lost only the least favorite character in the game, rather than throw in time travel shenanigans to save her and lol somehow everything is stronger now because the true big bad is able to do its thing with Generic Badguy McDude out of the way; never mind the questions that would raise.

I don't even remember how many hours I'd clocked in by the time I walked away to play other things.

I didn't mean to come off as offstandish or anything I just remember her doing that in topics about starting this and Octopath just posted end and post game spoilers with little fanfare or warning. Wasn't sure if it was malicious or if there was a reason behind it

They're literally all blocked out, who cares. Don't look at it. That is the entire point of the 'spoilers' block.

Entity's post is actually specifically about the length of the game, which is what the topic is about. The reason why it's longer than it needs to be is a bit spoilery. Personally I agree, I did not like the last part from a story perspective.

Weird... I 98%'d the game in just 65 hours. I'm just missing farming a bazillion items to learn all the skills 'cuz there's not enough SP to go around

Most of them aren't that long from the PS2 era either. There's some exceptions of course, but there's only a few(unless you're trying to go full on with the side stuff.

I think game companies fear people bitching about game length as a huge issue, shit the latest God of War is about 30ish hours to just beat the main story.

Blowing the doors off any previous God of War game, in length. So we aren't just seeing longer times on JRPG's.

The latest God of War was good too

Ill take a game with a good story and gameplay that is 5 hours long over an 80 hour game that just isnt very interesting in story or gameplay

Right, quality over quantity. It's one thing if a game is 60-100 hours but worth the time put into it, but another if it's all bloat and mind-numbing. On the other hand, I recently played the game Gris, and that is very much worth the three or so hours is takes to play a complete file.

I know this is probably an unpopular opinion, but I felt that Gris dragged for me mentally, because I found it boring. It was still very beautiful, but I needed a bit more I suppose! Like, it felt long even though it was short lol.

Time-wise, consider that the PS/PS2 era is to now what the crash and revival of video games in the 80s were to the PS/PS2 era. Twenty to twenty-five years may not be as far as forty, or even eighty, but hey, what even are eras?
