Do you think this is a bomb?

It appears the much anticipated and highly rated Suicide Squad Reboot directed and written by James Gunn was not as spectacular with the viewers as once thought after the 4.1 million thursday previews and the movie only surmounting to a 12.1 million opening in 4002 theatres with a mid high 20M range which is under the 30M projected by Warner Brothers and others were eyeing.

It's been weeks tracking high with it being the only super hero movie opening but the movie ended up even opening LOWER than BIRDS OF PREY which was a disappointing result as well at 33M

Many are expecting the fan front loading with an expected drop on Saturday and some are wondering if the delta variant is scaring away viewers or if the property is not as strong as once thought despite a strong 100+ million opening for the original Suicide Squad that was much more hated by critics

The country is at its highest for theatre reopenings since the pandemic started and the theatre businesses can't be happy with this result and Gunn's reboot only received a B+ cinemascore, the same as David Ayer's rendition

It is however playing on HBO Max which may eat into sales but DC movies are still playing catch up to Marvel which Black Widow made 3x the number this movie made in its opening weekend and with a budget of over 200 million it needs to earn a lot to be profitable

Do you think this movie bombed?

Well no shit. The title alone is confusing as fuck since nobody knew if it was a sequel or a mulligan on the first failure of a film.

It is on HBO Max at the same time. It is hard to really guage how much that impacts films and how much they will bring in.

Also, DC movies are always more of a play to international markets, not just NA.

I don't think box office numbers will mean much for the forseeable future with movies having simultaneous premieres on streaming services and a sizeable portion of the population still not ready to return to theaters.

It's just the new box office.
Covid has literally changed the world. There is no 'Normal' just PreCovid and PostCovid.
I don't think billion dollar box offices will be seen again for years, if ever.

These. I watched it on HBO max last night myself. I'm sure they record those numbers as well. Way better than the first.

But the thing is, it doesn't matter how good a movie is if it's not actually making a profit.
No profit; no more movies. These things don't pay for themselves you know. The studio is gonna want to see some $$$

WB has already been going through several lawsuits akin to Scarlett's. All of the guilds are currently going through shit with the major studios over the same issue that there may be another guild strike

I'm not really sure what the viable business strategy was in releasing movies in cinemas and streaming service on the same day.

Maybe for low cost movies it makes sense but not more expansive blockbusters.

Not at all. It's a completely new/different film, including plot, characters, setting, etc.

It's closer to being a sequel, if anything.

COVID and HBO Max is a factor for sure but Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey flopped as well. Makes me wonder if Warner Bros will see a bit of a trend there. But if HBO Max gets a lot of viewers it might be okay.

Definitely a new director+writer. The title of the sequel would be The Anchorman.
