Kafka was a novelist in the search action genre

A lot of his writing reads like chapters out of a self-help booklet though.

"Metroidvania" is like "Kafkaesque" for video games, you really only need a passing familiarity with the reference to understand the term
That's notoriously a word that you say when you want to sound smart for describing something but don't know how, since you have no idea what the word actually means but you also know no one else knows what it means so they'll just go along with it

Metroidvania follows English conventions far more than Kafkaesque does. How many English words do you know that have the 2 vowels "uh-ehh" in a row? Or that include the sound sequence fk?

You can still figure out what Metroidvania means even if it's an unconventional term, it's not super complicated. I mean there should still be a better way to describe the genre but "search action" isn't it

Honestly, Mario-style RPGs are probably distinct enough from traditional RPGs to form a subgenre. I didn't realize indies were working on so many. And JUST like the Metroidvania indie boom, this is happening because major companies basically abandoned their own model. I mean this is just how genres work, right? When it's just Paper Mario and Bug Fables it's an oddity, if there's like 20 of the things it becomes a category.

I mean we had a topic a couple weeks ago classifying Earthbound clones as "depression RPGs" which was fun to think about but this is less of a stretch.

edit: I will say I don't think it is actually defined by the "paper" aesthetic though so much like Metroidvania it's jargon that requires knowledge of Paper Mario's game mechanics

also i wouldn't say it's that simple to do it well

like, if i recall, lost odyssey had this but it was the most basic execution of it, just a single timed hit for normal attacks, and it wasn't very satisfying at all. mario RPGs work so well because there's all sorts of variety to it and they really make you feel the impact viscerally. just adding a timed circle to a normal attack doesn't actually feel very good.

Absolutely, because no one uses them correctly. (Well I dunno about Shakespearean, I don't hear that often.) I'm curious how you would define these if they are so obvious. Let me hear your definition of "hooking up" too, if we're talking high school words.

There are definitely moves in Mario RPGs that work this way! And because the numbers are so low, the pity 1 damage or whatever you get on failed commands can still be fairly punishing.

For certain moves, but generally not for standard attacks. Plus, I'd prefer the timing to coincide with the actual attack rather than some sort of pre-attack ring.

First of all how dare you make me remember YIIK. Absolutely cursed paper game depression rpg.

Second of all, battles in that game don't take forever due to the action inputs, they take forever because the game is horribly optimized and laggy PLUS the damage numbers and HP totals have absolutely godawful balance. The action inputs are a distant third place contributor!

In high school it matters a lot more. People say it implying that they did more than they did, since it's ambiguous. Also if you're under 25, you'll stop hearing it soon, trust me.
