I started the time war, and used every chance I could get to double the timelines in which I was powerful.

In other dimensions my forces were weak, and my opponent's army was heavy and powerful. But discipline proved my greatest ally; my defenses were sound, pristine. Behind a line of pawns, my troops were jumping into the stronger dimensions.

Logic demanded that I fork dimensions in which I was strong, creating dual universes in which I had 2 queens and 4 knights against a single king and a skeleton crew.

In the weaker timelines my defeat was imminent. 3 queens, 4 bishops, knights and rooks were ready to bear down upon my king and his pawns.

But my knights were stronger, seemingly everywhere at once. For in some of the timelines my opponent was restless; his king idly pacing as he sought to buy himself some time.

But time can't be bought, it has to be made.

My party of knights attack in unison. Victory is imminent.

Completely out of options my enemy flees into the past, a desperate attempt to avoid his doom. He flees into his strongest past, creating another alternate timeline in which his power is beyond measure and in which I am helplessly weak, albeit well-defended and patient.

I move without purpose, knowing my true power lies not in the present, but in the future.

My strategy is sound. I double down. Anything and everything from the weaker timelines is used to fork my stronger dimensions and increase the odds in my favor.

It is unnecessary. Time has already advanced, and 2 of my knights are slicing across the void, slaying the enemy king simultaneously in 6 dimensions.

I am victorious.

I used to play chess in tournaments

When I first saw the mechanic in 5d chess where perspective switches to another timeline I got sick to my stomach and turned the game off

The pieces also can move into alternate timelines based upon the premise that the orthogonal directions are each 1 dimension. The past is another dimension. Interacting with the past creates alternate dimensions. For the purposes of gameplay, it matters which player creates the dimension.

The game itself shows you which moves are valid, so it's easy to pick-up and play.

Happy to answer any questions about the game.

That's another game (not the one from the OP). I played this one last night. The OP game was on normal setting. The one in this picture was only training difficulty.

My current game. My enemy and I have created 10 timelines, all of which are existing at the same time, in the present.

The future is currently unknown. There is no fate but what we make.

The true battle is an arms race across dimensions. For a while my opponent would not split time, content to fight in 2 parallel dimensions.

I do not pretend to understand my opponent's plan, but I feel the pressure of their knights inching ever closer.

Yet in 2 of these dimensions my enemy is all but naked. An army queens looks down empty files. An extra knight waits to offer support if needed. Perhaps the King can flee.

But maybe he can't.

How do different dimensions work

A new timeline is created by sending a piece into the past. You can't change the past, but you can fork off of it. When a timeline is created it is (distance+1) from the center-most timeline or (distance-1) depending upon which player created the timeline.

what if you get a checkmate in one but not the others

You only need a single checkmate to win.

how many can you make and when can you make them?

I think you mean dimensions here. Anytime you send a piece to the past it will fork the timelines. You can create as many as you have moves, with one caveat: if you create 2 timelines before your opponent creates 1 timeline, then your second timeline will be inactive until the present gets moved back to it. There is a bar labeled "The Present" and this is exactly what it sounds like. Essentially players take turns being in control on when a forked past will move "The Present."

But again there is a complication. You could create a ton of optional timelines that don't need to to be played, then, after I create a new dimension, travel far back into the past. All of your optional timelines will now become mandatory as the present moves through them.

what if you checkmate him but he goes back in time to when he wasnt checkmated?

The king can flee into a nearby parallel dimension, creating a new copy of it if it was in the past. If no king is in check, then it wasn't checkmate. If the king can't escape at all it's checkmate. It's definitely possible to go into the past before you were checkmated, but kings don't move very far (1 square in 1 or 2 dimensions).

Just beat the computer in 5 moves, using a kind of scholar's mate. My queen is forking 2 enemy kings, one in the present, and another 4 moves ago, when the computer (stupidly) played e4.

It's time to up the difficulty to the engine's max settings. I can choose aggressive or balanced for the "strong" AI. I'll start with aggressive because I think it will be easier than balanced.

I also won the other game I posted a picture of yesterday (image below).

It was an arms race across time but in 4 of the timelines I was very strong, with 3 Queens in each and my "guns" (queens protected by queens and aimed at the king) already constructed.

The computer tries to flee to the past to buy some time, but it can only escape into one of my stronger dimensions. Meanwhile its defeat was again imminent, waiting in the future.

The image shows the checkmate I delivered with 5 queens across 14 dimensions which simultaneously attacked 8 of the opposing kings, sometimes more than once.

Beat the AI on Strong-Aggressive (first try). Working through the puzzles also.

Looks like I'm going to have to play some humans for a challenge.

For some reason the AI sent a king out into the open. I attacked immediately with a bishop for checkmate.

The AI was too slow on the "Balanced" setting. It started to take 10-20 minutes per move. Need some limits on the AI or something.
