Worldwide communication was different, particularly in warfare back then. In things like video games and board games we see information transferred instantaneously across large forces, but historically it could take months for information to reach different commanders, which resulted in the bombing of Hiroshima long after Hitler had evacuated from Japan and died.

Yea. They arguably had nothing to do with Japan's surrender either. Remember, prior to the bombs being dropped Japan was staring down America and was NOT expecting to win. At best they were hoping for a stalemate and peace. They weren't expecting to lose just cities but entire islands to resist America.

The problem was Russia. Not only was Russia finally bringing it's military muscle down on Japan; Japan very swiftly realized that the Soviets wouldn't look too kindly on an Emperor considering what they did to their Czar. So they sued for peace with America mainly because it was hoping the Americans wouldn't be as harsh and western capitalism was infinitely more appealing to them than Soviet communism. The timing with the bombs was just so convenient since Japan could tell its citizens that they had no chance against American superweapons and America, well, used a massive explosion to beat its enemy (which speaks to every American on a primal level).

When I think of the greatest victims of WW2, my mind inevitably turns to the thousands of children killed in the atomic bombings, and the poor, brave US patriots who had to sort through their corpses to confirm none of them were Hitler. Such an unappreciated and yet vital part of the war effort.

If he were to get a good, up close look at the destruction, I'm sure he'd be immediately vaporized by the shockwave.

Probably something similar to what he did when informed of the Normandy landings: say "The news couldn't be better", while his generals pulled O RLY faces.

They had to rely on one of those Hiroshima bomb shadows. They had to ID Hitler from a profile silhouette...

?? Thatsinteresting. How do you figure?

After Pearl Harbor I dont think much excuse was needed to want to fight the Japanese. Also, sure, they werent hosting the Holocaust, but they were doing some extremely nasty things in China also.

It's because they were mostly targeting Chinese people, who became the enemy later.

It's the same reason a lot of Nazi atrocities against the Russians tend to be overlooked or belittled, while the "rape or Berlin" gets a ton of attention.

While they may not have been quite as focused in their choice of targets, on sheer body count in the Japanese were pretty close to the Germans.

The bombings of Japan were required to end the war - Japan's war propaganda was simply too powerful, the country would have fought and died to the last surviving human and total Japanese extinction. What's the cost of 2 cities to prevent that?
