Theres a bunch of boomers in my citys local Facebook groups bitching about young people being lazy and not working in restaurants lol

Who wants to run around all day to maybe get decent money and definitely deal with shitty people when you can work from home and make like $20 an hour in your underwear

I mean, I tip, but don't most places have laws now that ensure they have to be compensated at least minimum wage if they don't get enough tips? At least that's how it is in CA.

I'm glad restaurants are understaffed.

They can either pay their workers a living wage, or go bankrupt.

I still believe that tipping is stupid. Did you know that in the early years, it was ILLEGAL to tip in America?

It was considered anti American because people were bribing servants for better service than other Americans would get. The idea was all citizens should get the same service

Fuck tipping.

any service industry vet will tell you employees dont report owners who fail to meet this obligation out of fear of retaliation

It happened to my mother, who, at the time, was working for a VERY well known chef and restaurant in Boston. Someone ratted him out to the better business bureau or whoever handles shit like that. The very next day, he held a company meeting vowing to go after whoever blew the whistle.

That's just a surefire way to get fucked even further if they made it public that they will retaliate

No downside

Eh, it takes someone actually listening to you when you file a complaint for anything to happen. Casinos routinely will tell you they will close before they allow card dealers to unionize, which is illegal, but not one casino has ever been held liable for this take as far as I know.

That seems like a counter-productive protest, considering how you're fucking over the exact people you're trying to support.

How long ago was that? Lol

Most restaurants I know DO give compensation when not enough tips are being made nowadays - yes, here in Boston

maybe 7 years ago. I had a job where I got a month and a half off every year. One year,(about 4 years ago) outta boredom, I took a job waiting tables in the south end...they most definitely did not supplement my paycheck if I made less than minimum wage

I had to re-read this a few times. What sense does that make? You're not sticking it to the business, you're screwing the employee.

That's completely fucked brodie, my bad - the whole industry if full of so many ungrounded grievances that I do tend to roll my eyes and become skeptic of certain claims

That's the kind of shit you bring to the news or IG to have people drag that business out and air out shitty practices like that >_> there is definitely no way to make a living off of that

I'd be more inclined to tip better if servers made cook wages and cooks got the tips

They're the ones that deserve it (as long as the food is from a good place and they don't just reheat stuff)

Fairly certain there was never a time he made less than $7.25 an hour.

Restaurants say they have to make up the difference, but never do, because they dont have to. It literally takes one table per hour to get the minimum covered.

Cooks can, quite frankly, only cook. They cant manage a dining room and all the intricacies that come with that. A server has to manage all aspects of a restaurant in order to maximize service, flow and ultimately, profit.

Thats what happens when people stop tipping, servers have no reason to give anything but the minimum level of service.
