It's a fuckin calculator, the cheapest processor imaginable, in a cheap plastic housing that for the most part kids use for basic math, but they were charging $100-130 when I was in school, i'm sure it's even more now.

I still use my 20 year old TI-89 on a daily basis. I can't say that about any other piece of electronics from 20 years ago.

You know, when I held one for the first time it really felt like I actually had a 'computer' in my hand >_>

I had a computer at home too but it was running The Yukon Trail so it never felt like a computer beyond the times I'd have my fingers wiggle and slap keys around just to make keyboard sounds like someone was actually computing something

Had to be a partnership between them and the schools, because we had to get those specific calculators for some reason.

Then again, while I don't use mine a lot, it still works after all this time.

Absolutely. And the damn thing was required
My mom bought me a goddamn casio because it was $50 but had all the same functions.

I was fuckin lost for ages because the way my math teachers where, they had a flow chart with the buttons, and mine was completely different in the way functions were pressed

yeah my HS had dirt poor students so they didn't require them, i think a few math courses had enough for people in class but that's it. i didn't get one until college.

No way.

Learn to do all that complicated dumb shit by hand or in your head OR

Pay 100 bucks and for the year just type it all in to a calculator.

I'll tell you what, i've never had to figure logarithms or sines, cosines or tangents in the real world.

My high school issued them if you were in a math class that needed them. Lose them or damage them and they charged over $100. It's better than making all the students buy their own, but it was a definite scam considering they looked at every little scratch on them to charge you and still just used them the next year like they didn't just consider it damaged enough to charge a kid full price for it. Plus, these are high school kids were talking about, there was no way they weren't getting a huge chunk of change each year from "damaged" calculators.

I used sine and cosine last week but had to look up how to use it (and then had to just look up how to program it in for the specific situation I was using it.) I used tangent too, but I'm not convinced I did it properly beyond "the line I expected to be perpendicular to the tangent ended up more or less where I expected it to be."

This was basically my story when I was in middle school in the late 90s.

They demanded that we use TI-83s in one of my pre-algebra classes and everyone somehow got one, but my parents were on to their BS. I had a Casio graphing calculator that was 50-some dollars that could basically do what the TI-83 could, but it was hard for me to keep up with class since everyone was taught with the TI-83.

When I got to college, all my professors would say (you guessed it) no graphing calculators to be used for exams. So then I purchased a (grabs it) a TI-30XIIS that I still use to this day. **** that graphing calculator nonsense.

No they were great. Loved my TI-83. allows you to put your whole expression, graph, and do more complex things than a regular calculator.

do they at least make you wipe all programs you might have on the calculator? I mean it was pretty easy in college just to make a new program on your calculator to just type notes/formulas/etc into and use it on the test

Same, ended up not being able to complete a bunch of required math classes due to being too poor to afford the calculator the teachers actually knew how to use. Ended up dropping out and now Ive worked at Burger King for the past 17 years dreaming about being able to afford a TI-89
