Paris-based Cyber Group Studioshas inked a co-development and co-production deal with Japanese video game company Square Enix to adapt its fantasy/adventure title Final Fantasy IX as an animated series for eight- to 13-year-olds.

In addition to producing the show, Cyber Group will also handle worldwide distribution, licensing and merchandise.

The company is putting the finishing touches on a project bible, and plans to begin pitching it to broadcasters in the coming months, says Pierre Sissmann, CEO of Cyber Group Studios.. While episode count and length had not been finalized at press time, Sissmann says the goal is to begin production by the end of 2021 or beginning of 2022.

Final Fantasy IX (pictured)centers around a thief who kidnaps a princess and then teams up with her to save the kingdom from evil forces. Originally launched in 2000, the game has sold more than five million copies worldwide.

The 30-year-old Final Fantasy franchise has been adapted for TV before, but this marks the first time the games ninth iteration specifically will be adapted as an animated kids series.

Final Fantasy is one of the most popular kid-friendly video game franchises ever, with more than 154 million copies sold worldwide, according to Square Enixs 2020 annual report. That popularity, and a chance to expand the brand with new characters and adventures, is what attracted Cyber Group, says Sissmann.

The games have a strong co-viewing potential. For those who do know Final Fantasy IX , this will be an [introduction], he says. And for the many who dont, this will immerse them in a universe theyll love.

Also, this is the only source out there now, so temper your expectations. It could be bullshit.

Plenty of stuff aimed at that age group can be great even as an adult (Spongebob, Ed Edd & Eddy and Mucha Lucha in particular come to mind), so I'll certianly be willing to give it a chance at least. Not like I can't just, y'kno, stop watching if it's crap.

About 15 years late on this one. After that point, I kinda lost interest in the world of FFIX.

Why are they marketing an animated series based off a game that came out in the year 2000 to 8-13 year olds? Chances are most 8-13 year olds have never played this game.

Doesn't even make any sense.

This. Theres very little in IX thats much darker than anything youd see in like, Avatar.

Youd probably have to tone down the events in Cleyra, and some of the more overt sexual themes, but thats about it.

Kids shows can and have dealt with mature themes such as this regularly. Hell Adventure Time delves into everyone of these and then some. Hell more so then most anime/manga even.

Whoever wrote this article seems to think since FFIX has diorama designs rather than proportional designs, its aimed at kids? Sakaguchi just like the diorama style for Final Fantasy, and thinks every FF should be like that because that was his original vision for the series.

FFVIII was the first game Sakaguchi had nothing to do with and abandoned the diorama style~ and was seen as a crisis for the series in his perspective, Sakaguchi was scared people would think FF was about high school drama due to VIII's influence, and wanted to change that immediately with IX, going back to fantasy styled game.

Kind of funny that FFVIII would work alot better as a game for kids, than FFIX the one people think of as "kiddy" because they see it as "Chibi", rather then what Sakaguchi see's as diorama.

People seem to forget that the original Avatar: The Last Airbender wasn't exactly targeted towards adults either. Being targeted towards 8-13 year olds just means that there won't be any swearing and the blood will be kept to a minimum; both of which were nearly absent from the original game.

FF9 is not a kid's game. FF has never been a kids franchise. Any kid can play it, yes, but it's never been aimed at kids and it's weird as fuck to argue otherwise.
If it walks, talks, acts, and looks like a duck....its a damn duck. FF is no different from any other fantasy series kids watch regularly and even less mature.

But if you believe otherwise then whats holding it back? Guns? Sex? Blood/gore? Violence? Take your time.
