At boot camp they're actively trying to make you quit, fail, give up etc. If this kid were to act like the dog you think he's trained to be, he'd follow orders and see the Navy corpsman. When they see that you're fucked, that do everything they can to get you to see the proper medical, be it physical or mental, attention that you need.

The last thing the instructors want is a recruits life on their hands. I did Marine Corps boot camp. Broke my hip during training. I know first hand how quickly they are to act when they see a fucked up recruit. Instructors don't want to be responsible for that shit. They try to pass it off to medical at the drop of a hat.

Yeah also went to ft Leonard wood. The program is 100 percent designed to make soldier push through pain/sickness/signs of medical injury.

For example, drill sergeants make fun of the people in sick call who are lagging behind , and everyone laughs at them.

I never did sick call, but my battle buddy went to It and you go wherever your battle buddy goes. And even then I felt disgusted looking at all the people there, convincing myself they weren't really sick they just wanted time off from training. Ashamed of it now, but that's the mentality the army puts on their soldiers.

One if our sayings is "suck it up and drink water", enuff' said really. That flew in 2005 but now a days, no.

I feel as though Marines have a tough enough job should war actually break out, that you should have this level of training to prepare them.

When youre dropped in hostile territory, with very little supplies, and expected to hold a beach head or push in while you await the big army guys to relieve you, you just might find yourself going several days with very little sleep and shit rations, and be expected to not only keep your shit together, but to engage in combat like that. Our theoretical enemies certainly wont be going easy on them just because theyre tired and hungry.

While the occasional death or accident is obviously not the preferred outcome, having that unit break in combat because they arent prepared could be even more devastating for everyone involved.

Sucks that it happened, but like, it happens.

It just is what it is. Marine training is tough, not everyone is going to make it through it. His body quite on him, and that is a tragedy, but this doesn't happen all that often...and marines know the risks involved.
i dunno.. 54 hours without sleeping and eating sounds like some navy seals training shit. Especially when you are gonna be burning all those calories doing intensive exercises.. insane.

Marines do extreme sleep deprivation during basic? Always thought that was pretty much exclusively a special forces thing

No. As far as I am aware, only Marines moving to SEAL have to pass the crucible.

No. If you want to become a SEAL you join the Navy pass their initial fitness test and go through BUDS.

The Crucible is the final test all trainees go through at Marine bootcamp.

Oh, well it sounds like this was either a failing of the physical screening process or a freak accident. I would guess it's probably the latter.

These are people whos job in war is to land on a beach with very little supplies and to operate in hostile territory as a lightweight division that can move and strike fast so that other elements of the army can safely land behind them.

It is not unheard of for Marines to be low on food and supplies and to go a few days without sleep in the pursuit of their objectives. There is a good reason they put them through this type of training. Its to replicate, to their best of their ability, conditions troops might actually find themselves them in should they be asked to go into an area with hostiles.

You're allowed a total of 8 hours of sleep during the Crucible and you are given food, not sure why the article doesn't mention this. Hundreds of Marines pass the Crucible without fail. Hell my friend just got through it and is in Camp Lejune right now.

And this is nothing like BUDS that SEAL trainees have to go through. If you want an overview of what its like this video does a decent job of explaining what its like. The only thing he gets wrong is that he says women aren't allowed to apply. Its not that they aren't allowed but no woman has made it through the training before.

It doesn't make as titillating a story to mention that the recruits are provided an opportunity to sleep and eat.

I dunno the details about the training process in every branch, but some sleep deprivation is standard in Navy RTC. Your first couple days there, you'll probably be awake for about 36 hours, unless you managed to get a couple hours of sleep on your flight there.

That's because you'll probably arrive late at night, be up through the rushed checking and through the entire next day until about 10PM.

And then the last major training event is Battlestations, to simulate emergency situations onboard a ship that is under attack and to test you on the training you've received over the prior weeks.

You're expected to stay up the entire previous day's training, do Battlestations during the whole night, and then remain awake during the whole next day. If, at any point, you are found to be sleeping during that period you fail the evaluation and get kicked back a few weeks to try again. Assuming you got 8 hours of sleep the previous night, about 42 hours, if I recall.

But even then you have dinner before the event and the three meals the following days. Recruits getting sleep, shower time, and food was actually taken pretty seriously. Three meals a day provided, about 15 minutes to shower at the end of the day, and 8 hours alloted for sleeping (aside from watch-standing duty).

This. You're sending kids to go die for Jeff Bezos and other rich people. The age should be increased to 24; get some real life experience before the military brainwashes you.

The marines are known for harsher training than other military branches and it really stands to question why they're so necessary to this one branch. It's entirely possible there are outdated traditions.

to my understanding the marines do the heavy lifting, so to speak - the first to be deployed when the us goes to war, and likely subject to more intense conditions as such, with the army being deployed after a foothold has been established.
