Current Events > What is the logic behind requiring people to wear a mask on an airplane?

You're sitting right next to someone for an extended period of time. In some cases, hours. Then, they give everyone a snack and drink and everyone on the plane simultaneously takes off their mask to eat. Once that is over with, you still have people taking their masks off to drink.

Doesn't really seem too logical to me that masks would make a huge difference in situations like these. Is it all just a horse and pony show? What do you think?

My understanding is that even if it doesn't 100% eliminate the risk, it still reduces it. The virus wouldn't hang around very long in a plane due to how the ventilation works.

But the real reason to wear a mask on the plane is because it confuses the snakes.

Ok so basically the mask prevents saliva from getting all over shit. So yeah taking it off to eat or drink opens up the chance for that. But if you wear it in between it lowers the risk or at least reduces how much you spread all over contact surfaces

It's not the Andromeda Strain. Effectiveness of transmission is still based on total viral load and time within the proximity of someone with the infection. It's entirely common for caretakers to tend to someone with COVID19 for several days and never get the infection if they follow the safety guidelines of wearing a mask and washing their hands.

People have been going on flights, though. Plenty of people, throughout the pandemic, including myself. The number of flights have maybe been lower, but they're starting to increase exponentially as of a couple months ago.

If everyone is on a 2 hour flight, sitting next to each other, where their faces are less than 2 feet from touching each other, I don't understand the effectiveness of masks when everyone just removes them anyways to eat and drink next to each other.

I guess you can make the point "well maybe when the mask is on it helps a little" ---- but really? When the mask is off and you're next to the person and constantly taking the mask on and off.... does it really help?

Wearing the mask reduces the risk of it happening, so yes, it does help. There are numbers in between 0 and 100.

The logic is that ideally people should be masked up for the entire flight, but to appease dumbshits who bitch about it they're allowing some exceptions such as when eating or drinking while still trying to mitigate as much as possible.

Covid isn't like a vampire bite, the more you get exposed the worse your case can be. So wearing masks as much as possible particularly in a contained space may very much help.
