Topic.

i just got hired for a position at a mushroom plant picking mushrooms all day from 8-5pm. It has all health benefits and OT. Also off on weekends. I will just be standing all day picking mushrooms. But i'm in good shape to handle the job. Think its worth the drive?

I can save up for a newer car too.

I voted no, but honestly, it would depend on how likely you are to get a better paying job that's closer. I live in LA, so 1 hour commutes are normal here. It doesn't sound like the case for you.

Worst case, if you're unemployed, take the job into you find something better.

Um...you're driving about the same amount of time already for half as much. Seems like a no brainer. Unless you like what you're doing now much more than picking mushrooms all day, every day.

$16 dollars an hour is really quite a bit of money these days. It's close to minimum wage but even still. You can probably find something closer if you look. Its about 34k a year which is about the average entry level job for people without a college degree. The extra amount in gas is going to make it like you are making minimum wage. Still it's better than making nothing. Minimum wage is nothing to scoff at these days. It adds up. It's not like you are making $4 an hour. 30k or whatever is still 30k. And you can live well off that.

Holy shit; what do you think minimum wage is annually? Cause... 30k is way to damn generous for minimum wage.

Sorry I'm from MA. Minimum wage here is 13.50 an hour. The average in the U.S. is still like 7 dollars. I started out making 4 dollars an hour though. The first really professional job i got was $18. I drove 2 hours a day to that job. I don't regret it.

It's difficult sometimes and you are risking burnout. Don't overdo it or make it more stressful than it needs to be is all I'd say. It's definately easier if you can find something closer. I seriously drove 2 hours a day in heavy traffic which was sometimes much longer. It's not fun. Still the experience I gained from that job I wouldn't change. Some things I would.

You learn a lot about people sometimes too is the thing. Those people truly loved me there through thick and thin and great people all around. I have friends for life there. Some places aren't like that.

Yeah, it depends where you're from. I live in Los Angeles and minimum wage here is $15 an hour, so $16 would be a no go.

But yeah TC, if it's only 15 minutes more than your current commute, but double the pay, absolutely take that job.

I've done something similar but it came with large promotion potential.

I'd say it's worth it if that's the case, or if it's a job you really think you'd enjoy.

I personally wouldnt unless either they paid for your travel via reimbursement, or per diam. So as to cover your gas expenses and hotals for work days.

Otherwise on top of how physically demanding the job is it'll be easy to burn yourself out eventually. As your work hours will technically be 12 hours at the least on 5op of the daily 2 hours of driving.
