I'll probably be offered a job working second shift in the coming weeks. I'll take the offer unless another job that I feel less qualified for comes through and offers me the ideal first shift job. This would be my first time ever working a regular second shift. It'd be Monday-Friday. Has anybody ever worked a routinely second shift job before? How did you manage the difference in schedule of your friends and family? Are there any benefits that may not be as obvious?

As a side note, I have a current job offer that is also second shift, but with rotating weekends and holidays and also pays less. I don't think I will take it, but the idea of having some weekdays off to spend an evening with my wife is intriguing, though I'm not sure valuable enough that I'd give up my weekend.

I did for a while when I was a teenager and it was fast food. It's nice if you like to sleep in a lot, and you can run errands during the day. That's about it.

If it's M-F, I guess you just accept that your social life will be limited to the weekends. I didn't do it for long.

edit: to be clear, I would not take a job like that now under normal circumstances. I like 9-5 too much.

I had a full-time job where I had no set schedule and worked second shift probably 40% of the time. Between first, second and third, second was by far my least favorite.

working second shift and weekends is why I have a total of like two friends now compared to a decently-sized social circle before then

I've worked seconds and thirds before. Seconds aren't as big a pain because your sleep schedule is still an overnight deal, and people are typically understanding of the shift difference.

(Third shift is misery. Never again.)

Worked 2nd shift most of my life before moving to 3rd shift a year ago

I thought it was nice because I could go to bed relatively late like I normally do and then wake up without an alarm because I didn't have to be to work until 1 or 2:00 in the afternoon

Currently working 4pm-1am Tuesday-Saturday. I love having Mondays off. I also get to sleep in as much as I require and I'm working from home. Work life is great.

2nd plus weekends sounds brutal. Why and what are you doing that for?

You did indeed stab me in the back. However, you are only level one, whilst I am level 50. That means I should remain uninjured.

Second shift is annoying because if you wake up at a normal time like 9 or 10 then you have this dumb chunk of time where you can't really do anything because you have to go to work in a few hours.

To get around that I would just stay up until like 5AM and sleep in until I had to go to work but it doesn't feel great waking up at 2PM on the weekends. It feels extra bad when it's the winter in Chicago and the sun sets at 4:30PM. You basically only got 2 hours of seeing the sun with that schedule.

I think I would try and keep a fairly normal sleep schedule by going to bed when I got off work. I don't particularly enjoy being up into the early AM. Being able to wake up without an alarm daily would be nice. I agree that I would feel limited by what I could do during the day because of the impending work shift, though. Luckily with this job there is a track to first shift, but it would probably take a couple of years for availability and seniority to make it viable.

I used to work from 1 or 2pm to 10pm and I usually went to bed at 2 and woke up around 10. Got plenty of gaming done before work!

I love second shift because I hate getting up early. I did have a job where I worked 1-10pm on weekdays and 10am-6pm on weekends. That was the worst

I worked 12 hr mid shifts (5pm-5am) W-F.

Regularly took vitamin D pills and looked like a vampire, but I got ALOT of gaming in, so that was cool. The 4 days off was sweet.

Your sleep schedule will get put into whack. Id usually stay up til 7-8am and wake up at 4pm for work. On my days off Id try to stick to that sleep schedule. Using the late afternoon to run any errands.
