They dont have chairs because theyre working. Jobs like that you sit down when youre bored, maybe every so often if youre tired. If youre bored, find something to do. If youre tired, go home and let someone else work and make money.

My aunt who is only in her early 50's needed a hip replacement earlier this year because of working full time in retail for the last 20 something years in retail without a stool to sit on. This is in Canada. They are letting her sit on a stool when she goes back to work, but that's way too little too late.

Lmao right. I worked at a store where the GM literally sat in his office every single hour of the day then just left and they wondered why people hated it there and were so short staffed. I have never seen more worthless managers than when I worked retail

When I was manager I just told my workers if you want to sit down just do it out the sight of customers. Last thing I wanted to hear was a Karen or somebody from HQ complaining about it.

It does seem ridiculous. That said having a job where you sit all day at a computer does a number to your back and neck.

I think it is about time we publicly shame Karens out of existence. Fuck extra "customer service". I don't think of people that do a service as slaves nor should they be treated as such.

Some people do get lazy if they sit. I can verify based on personal expierence (everyone's different I know i know). At work a normal post allows me to sit most of the day and I find it annoying when someone asks me to do something cause I gotta get up (I do it but I'm annoyed) another post walking 10 miles during the shift is easy ive walked 16 before. Only sat down to eat once during the shift. Stayed busy the whole night. Was in a chipper mood 95% of it

and let's not even talk about self-checkout. i've hated it in theory since before it became widespread - and now, having worked a couple 8-hour self-checkout shifts, i really hate it in practice. you're now one cashier watching 4 registers.
you go from doing absolutely nothing but thanking people as they leave, to trying to deal with one person who fucked up while another person is waiting for you because they tried to scan a coupon and it didn't work right and another person is mad as hell because they're just buying beer and have to wait for you to come enter their birthdate and another person is mad because they can't scan an item because they put their purse in the bagging area and the computer won't let them continue until they move it, meanwhile every machine is screaming 'please move the scanned item to the bagging area' and 'please place your [RED BELL PEPPER] in the bagging area'

people here are so afraid of technology that the only 2 times i've seen self checkouts in my life were when i was in the uk and when i was in the netherlands

I love self check out. My walmarts doesnt do all that bagging area shit. I have to wait to have my birth date entered sometimes but im smart enough to wait on scanning that item until the cashier is not busy i go ahead and scan everything else until I notice they are free and I'll wave them over.

Yeah ive seen the I dont undersntand technology crowd. It will be tough for awhile be eventually self checkout will be a norm.

I'm torn thoughm i dont like jobs being replaced by shit like this but on the other gand everything is bagged how I like it and its usually a much smoother transaction

Its a lot slower if youre sitting and uncomfortable to have to stretch so much. Not sure how sitting would work unless youve got a bagger all the time or are not busy.

Personally, I'm convinced it's a status thing: only white collar workers are supposed to be privileged enough to sit on the clock.

I'm pretty sure it's this

They know if they give people chairs, they'll work harder/better, won't be half exhausted, and they'll start looking like human beings in the eyes of management.

Once that happens someone important will look at them and want to give them a raise.

pretty sure Aldi also pays their cashiers really well. I recall seeing a hiring poster in the entrance like 6 years ago for full time cashiers starting at $13/hr. Which was especially good pay for a cashier back then
