If this makes me racist, I'm sorry about it but thought I'd just share here. If mods think this is inappropriate, idk... y'all can report this topic then.

WD2 def looks like an amazing game and I actually enjoyed the first game with Aidan Pierce. So I couldn't make sense over why I just couldn't bring myself to continue playing WD2. I remember only playing slightly past the beginning portion, trying out some new clothes at a shop and walking around before putting down the controller and never again did I touch the game.

Now at the same time, it's pretty weird if you were to ask me to force myself to play this game just because of this silly reason of mine...yet I know I wouldn't be able to enjoy it. I googled around and seems this demotivation to play a game because of an unrelatable MC isn't all that uncommon. Also, just to clarify, this has nothing to do with race alone. I've seen players being unable to enjoy Witcher too because of Geralt looking rather...unrelatable. Or not being able to play God of War because they don't like Kratos' look. This is just a very small minority but sad to say, here I am a part of it.

Looking back I realize most of the games I truly enjoyed came down to actually liking the protagonist I'm plying as in the first place. For example, I don't like playing Metal Gear Solid because of Snake's appearance but I'm ok playing as Sam Fisher in Splinter Cell.
It ultimately comes down to my own inherent bias but honestly, I just can't do much about it, can I

More like I can't relate to the character... as me playing as him. Call it dumb but I always took immersion seriously. Even playing a game like Skyrim, I'd never choose a race like elf or khajit or argonian. It always has to be nords, imperials or at least, bretons. It's just something to do with me being able to identify AS the character I'm playing.

If you call this racist, sure go ahead. I'm just inherently biased by human instinct. And I'm sure we are all by some extent.

In fact Aiden Pearce was originally Asian but they made him white because they knew less people would buy the game.

Remember Me had it's budget cut by 66% when they refused to turn the protaganist from a black woman into a white man.

Life Is Strange had to be an episodic adventure game because they couldn't get enough funding for any more expensive genre due to having a lady main character.

I think Watchdogs 2 only did it at all because they targeted the "woke SJW" crowd, but there is a reason why most video game protags look like this:



The average American/European (who are your target audience) is racist.

And Chinese/Japanese players are more comfortable with a white guy than a black guy or female. Even games with create a character features default (which most gamers pick) to generic white dadbod guy. You won't see a Fallout or mass Effect game where the Default is a fat Mexican

Exceptions are rare and often when they are like Lara Croft of Bayonetta focus massively on sex appeal to teenage boys to sell.

GTA5 or RDR2 with 1 player character who is black or a chick would literally have lost hundreds of millions of dollars in sales.

Nier 1 famously changed the main character from a teenage boy (in Japan) to a dadbod 35+ year old generic hero because they knew it would sell better in America and Europe. And they were right.

Look how utterly furious people were that Ellie and Abby where the main characters (and ugly) in TLOU2. Instead of Joel or at least somebombshell in a latex wetsuit with huge exposed tits who bends over all the time.
