Plus you can still have a dog in that capacity and give them a good life. Just like you wouldn't use a Golden Retriever for security, if you want a cuddly dog to play with kids and go to the park and be around other animals don't get a Pitbull. The bark is almost as important as anything else and I've known some smallish labs with one helluva big bark. Living in a residential neighborhood and chaining a dog outside in a yard it could potentially escape from and teaching it to attack anything that moves is in fact an improper way to raise a dog, I would consider that person too inexperienced and unfit to own that dog or any other type of dog really.
