My first playthrough file says playtime 156:47:32, keeping in mind a lot of that was Lore, Item Drops/Steals completion (basically going over the whole map again because I didn't really bother stealing from every unique enemy per area until beating the game first)

Also for all that is unholy, grinding a full party's worth of ultimate weapons as I mentioned

NG+ rushthrough carrying over playtime is 164:08:07

So correction: swordmaster is broken. When you equip two of the same type of weapon and you master the job, you also get the two specialities of the sub-class. And since Freelancer has "Late Bloomer" where your stats go up for every job mastered and I've mastered most of them, my swordmaster Adelle and Seth are ridiculous strong and all have great defense stats.

Which jobs are gained from sidequests and which chapters? I dont want to miss any but Im pretty over the side quests at this point and would rather skip the unnecessary ones.

I don't think you can miss any jobs. I believe Gambler, Salve-Maker, and Bravebearer are the only "optional" ones.

I wouldn't call Bravebearer optional either really, it is required to make progress

But then technically Gambler & Salve-Maker are also required for that so never-mind. They're the only out-of-the-way ones though I guess.

Aww yeah BnD. It actually took me a bit to get used to it, but that's because for some reason I thought sandwiching was only for one square, so I kept getting confused by how my opponent kept flipping so much of my territory. But then I realized the game is basically go and I understood how I should actually be playing. I enjoy using the Gambler card at the very end.

Using a points system to take your opponents cards and seeing how expensive the character and job cards are, I feel like it's going to be quite a grind to finish the binder. I also think they maybe went a step too far in complicating matters with the fortify and poison mechanics, and I worry what other random card effects I may encounter later.

Yeah I think the card game suffers a bit from the Tetra Master problem of over complicating a perfect simple game for no real positive gain.

I finished chapter 3 tonight. This game gets pretty dark at times and its pretty jarring juxtaposed with the cutest art style.

Speaking back on the first game a bit.. It's insane how overpowered Meteor + Pierce M. Defense is in the first game. Any boss under 160k hp (aka virtually every boss in the game, even Derosso and Yulyana ) can be OHKOed on turn 1 after only grinding time mage and black mage to level 12, which makes meteor a virtually automatic 9,999 on a single target, and much higher on a multi target, with half decent equipment and just about any level 9+ class.. And getting a class to level 9 is quick.

There's some.. Very severe balance issues (like Utsusemi+Transcience), but this is fairly ridiculous.

I just did a lategame fight with 3 bosses totalling 205k hp and took them all out on the first turn...

Just staring Chapter 2. Gonna guess that this Edna woman is Adelle's sister, mostly just based on accents, but also it's a JRPG.

lol wow, just had a normal fight where a moth paralyzed the whole team at once and then they proceeded to slowly get picked off one by one while I sat there unable to do anything. Twice the paralysis wore off just in time for the character to be killed ahead of their turn.

I appreciate the fact that I defeated the true final boss after using Elvis' special, so his weird smooth jazz music was playing while the final boss was dying.

I just mastered Beastmaster on my first character and checked to see what the unlocked aspect was. Holy shit. Gloria's stats are ridiculous now. I can't believe this is a thing, lol. I mean I know they'll drop when I switch her out, but still.

Finally finished this tonight. The ending felt pretty...unsatisfying? Which was frustrating because the game was finally starting to do some fun storytelling stuff in that last chapter.

I haven't been playing very fast, but I'm making progress. In the snowy area now, forget if it's Chapter 3 or 4. There's some kinda interesting parts to the stories, but the dialogue itself is rather bland so far. But now I'm in front of a big ol' dragon so maybe things will pick up.

Equipment weight had never really bothered me, but I just struggled to kill this undead horse rare monster and now I can't use the Dark Robes I stole from it because they're way too heavy. Bah.

Damn, that Bomb Arm is no joke. Thankfully I have three icefire shields so the second time went much smoother. Also went back and captured some of the abaddons for their dark attack.

I like how you can tell an asterisk holder is probably gonna die if their outfit doesn't change after you beat them.

Game beated. Definitely a step down from the previous two games. The story was weirdly straightforward? I kept expecting some kind of crazy twist that changes everything like the first two games had, and it never came. I also kept expecting something about the asterisks twisting your mind, since that seems to happen with the first few asterisk bosses, but that never came either, or at least was never explicitly stated.

Godspeed Strike + Mimic trivialized everything, but I enjoyed the game nonetheless.

I think I'm getting near the end of Chapter 4. I guess I expected it to only be the return visits, so I was surprised when I saved the third town and was immediately railroaded to Holograd and it hadn't moved on to Chapter 5 yet. Also surprised Rimedhal isn't helping with the attack, but they'll probably join later or something. This airship is kinda cool, and the platform puzzling wasn't as annoying as I expected. That second room looked like it was gonna be horrible, but it was pretty manageable.

Adam's end was anti-climactic. Obviously it wasn't gonna be the end of the game, and he was just the precursor to Edna's plot, but it felt like he rolled over and accepted death too easily (the fight was good though). Maybe he'll still be alive somewhere with a sidequest later (but his costume didn't change so that's some strong evidence he's gone for good).

Cut a bunch of grass whenever you go somewhere new and you can get some nice equipment stronger than what's otherwise available. Plus money.

Oh well early on it's obviously nice to have the JP Up skills from Freelancer, but I also liked having Solar Powered and Lunar Powered on everyone for nice MP management. It seems like anytime you're inside, the game counts that as day so Solar Powered still works in caves and things, but Lunar Powered seems not to.

You can scare the enemies along the beach outside Halcyonia until they all huddle together in a corner as a way to chain up a bunch of easy fights for good JP gain.
