Alice in Borderland, Battle Royale, Doubt, Future Diary, Kaiji, Liar Game (I guess this isn't exactly a death game, iirc, but it has the same philosophy), etc.

I'm not criticizing, or anything, since they can be really well done, but I was kinda curious.

I can't say for sure, but I think the huge success of the film Battle Royale is at least partially responsible for its particular subgenre in Japan.

Also the movie is coming out on 4K Blu-ray, in England.

Here is how all Japanese media works in Japan. Someone comes up will a cool interesting premise we haven't really seen before. Then everyone else copies that premise for decades until it's a meme.

Death games and Isekais are all really simple to come up with and copy so everyone shits them out hoping the masses latch onto it

its like slasher movies in the 80s
its not hard to push stereotypes into these deadly situations and still make a profit so they get pushed out instead of more creative ideas

thanks for the answers.

I actually do have Battle Royale (the book), and I should read through it one of these days, especially since I've already read the manga and watched the movie.

I think it's worth noting that originator series generally hold up well in these genres. Like isekai is easy to shit on but go back and watch Escaflowne and it's still really good.

escaflowne is far from the originator tho, Magic Knight Rayearth is one year earlier in the same genre of isekai+mecha.

heck, Aura Battler Dunbine is over 20 years earlier than the.

Yeah I used series as a plural. I am talking about the ones that popularized the genre. Magic Knight Rayearth is definitely in there.

I remember seeing a bit of Escaflowne when it was shown on one the local channels, as a kid, but I must have forgotten that it was an isekai.
