Also the electric company had the nerve to do a robocall telling me that my power had been restored. I was sitting in my apartment with no power, lol.

I have small-scale solar for this sort of thing.

Also, when you say a 12V Inverter, are you talking 12 to 120 to run a laptop or something?
Because it is very difficult to find a pure sine wave inverter in stores.
I found an inverter at Lowe's. Now just trying to find a charging station to charge my car all the way back up while I work.

Whelp, turns out i probably shouldn't have been running my heat pump under 40 degrees at all. whoopsieeee

hope I didn't break it, sure hoping when it warms up later this week it comes back on.

Somehow, my heating coil is working with the setting on emergency heat, maybe not as efficiently as it was but my house never got under 62 degrees and apparently people with working units couldn't get theirs up to that anyways.

I got 3 space heaters going now though (low setting)... I'm never going to financially recover from this.

power outages suck. think in eastern oregon it's nothing compared to what texas is dealing with. some have been out for 4 days :(.
if i lived further south to portland i would've been out without power for 2 days mininum due to the icy roads.

power did go out for maybe 5-10 minutes when it all started.

If the gamefaqs moderation system actually worked as intended, users like the one trolling this topic would be perma banned. They're obviously only interested in being here to troll. Why sit back and allow that kind of person to stay on the website? Mods that are reading this, why do you see a series of posts like this and not do anything about it?

Electric

I still have no power. A pipe burst somewhere in the building I'm in so I don't have water either. I'm charging my car right now, but checking to see if any food place is still open. Probably not going to find anything.

I've been driving around ALL DAY
  • Find the inverter I needed, but haven't used it yet
  • Living on gas station food right now because I can't cook anything and all the real food places are closed
  • Got to see how well my car handles icy roads a lot more as the night went on. Made it to the Supercharger in Schertz, TX. Had to take some back roads because the highways are all blocked off. Took forever. Came upon some icy hills, but my car didn't get much trouble navigating over them. A couple people couldn't maintain traction and had to turn back.
  • Decided to drive west from San Antonio for some dumb reason. Ended up at a McDonald's that I couldn't even see because it was so dark. Decided to turn back.
  • My windshield started icing over on the way back. Had to turn the heat and defrosting all the way up to see where I was going. This hit scary. There was a small window in the ice that I could see through and it was dark AF.

I was trying to make my way back to the Supercharger in Leon Springs, TX, but the electric company had turned that one off by the time I got back to it.

That sounds like an adventure. I'm pretty sure I've done each one of them in some way shape or form...but I at least saw them coming.

Honestly, if you have the right car for it driving in the snow can be a blast.

Not going to lie, it is interesting hearing people just dealing with stuff for the first time.

Also, use that inverter sparingly on any sensitive equipment.
Most store-bought inverters put out a modified sine wave which is really not meant for high-end electronics.

Edit: I think you are pretty much out of the clear in a few hours. It looks like there is a nice front coming in for you.

Wind turbines are also frozen
Yup, totally the wind turbines fault. Even though they provide maybe 15% of the power, it is all their fault. Not the other 85% that comes from gas and coal. Nope, strictly that damn green energy.

Honestly, I can't understand the freakouts. Live in the suburban chicago area and have been through winter blackouts before. Is it mostly a lack of blankets and clothes that are causing such an issue to stay home? Seen people here talking about using their cars, and seems like such a worse idea. Carbon Monoxide poisoning is real and people tend to be idiots about it. Keep a window cracked and the tailpipe cleared at a minimum. But it might only buy you a day or so, if the gas pipes are frozen and you can't refill at the local station.

I wasn't saying that all this was the wind turbines' fault. I was just adding that the wind turbines were frozen in addition to what the poster I quoted mentioned.

My car is fully electric and doesn't emit carbon monoxide.

The point of that part was the fact that even with the defroster on, there was a period of time where the windshield was almost completely covered in ice except for a circle that I could see through, but you intentionally left that part out.

I was lucky that they're actually doing the rolling blackouts in my area now. On and off a few times now. Glad that's going.

Pipes still frozen. We resorted to melting chunks of ice using the gas stove that's still up to refill toilet tanks. Luckily had enough water stored up for food purposes. Running low on that though. Tried to refill earlier today but water dispenser stations were frozen over and the HEB I went to had no power. Roads were too dangerous to try anywhere else.

Not out of the woods though. 2nd winter storm rolling through midday Wednesday I believe. This time it'll be 80% chance frozen rain iirc.

Just got home and so have no power. That drive home was treacherous AF.
  • Disabled vehicles with no lights on in super dark areas.
  • A number of people just blew through disabled traffic lights at intersections.
  • There was one road where I had to make a slight left turn. When the light turned green, it felt like I was driving on a sheet of ice. I hit the accelerator and the car barely moved. The tires were spinning, but it was like a boat.
  • I saw trucks from the electric company on the road near my apartments so I'm hoping that means good news soon.

Apparently providers asked the utilites regulators to lift a price cap because a price cap to protect consumers was somehow to blame.
